Meet Moslin Washington-Fisher of PKM Administrative Services Aldine

Today we’d like to introduce you to Moslin Washington-Fisher.

Moslin, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
PKM Administrative is a tax preparation and consulting company. PKM is the acronym for my three children who are now adults. Percy, KeEmma and Malcolm. I started preparing taxes over 20 years ago just because I had a fascination for numbers. I would literally go to the post office and gather the IRS tax booklet, a number of pink forms and just prepare simple returns for myself and a few friends. Then one day after studying the tax rules, I prepared a business return. My ex-husband would mow yards. So, I found out that I could deduct our expenses as a write-off. We did not get audited and then I felt I was onto something. I then got hired at H&R Block as a tax preparer and learned more. Well, after going through a divorce twice, I realized that I am now a single parent raising my children alone. I took what I learned at H&R Block, and began to venture out on my own charging a very minimum price $20/per return as a means to supplement my regular income that also grew in the medical coding and auditing arena. Through word of mouth, I began to grow from five customers to now a clientele over 75. I purchased my own software, purchased business cards and now we are on the web.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has definitely not been a smooth road.. As a single parent, I worked a lot and the funny part is, I kept returning back and forth to college to pursue my Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting. Accounting became a little complex, so I changed my major to Business Administration. By the time I graduated from University of Houston and University of Phoenix, I had been divorced twice and a grandmother. I can remember as the clients paid me, I would literally pay a bill as soon as they left or I would have to use it to purchase groceries, or something for the kids. For years PKM was not as it is today.

Tell us about your company. What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of as a company? What sets you apart from others?
Currently, PKM is more than a tax preparation company, we offer financial consultations on business start-up. We are now preparing small business tax returns, consulting on start-up, retirement option, real estate investing, etc. I say “We”, but I am the owner and the tax preparer. My daughter and her friend are the social media assistants. My company is home-based and so there are some clients that I have literally watched their kids grow up. There are some clients that sought my financial advice as they were preparing for retirement. What makes me most proud of my company is how it has evolved with the future in mind and how my clients rely on me. That makes me feel great. Our kindness and education that we provide to our clients is what sets us apart. My clients tell me that they feel warmth while they are in my office and knowledgeable when they leave.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Trust and integrity is what I feel is most important to our success. Also, success in my standpoint is not only earning extra income, but helping people achieve financial empowerment whether it be small or huge.
