Meet Myla Lott of Sky Angel Doula in Spring

Today we’d like to introduce you to Myla Lott.

Myla, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Moving to Houston is one of the best decisions I have ever made. I’m trying to think of where it began. Some years back, my mother, who had worked many years in the medical field, including in Labor and Delivery, first told me about Doulas and what they do. A Doula is a trained professional who provides continuous physical, emotional, and informational support to a mother and family before, during, and shortly after birth.

I had always found the idea of a Doula pretty fascinating! Now come, 2018 and a big move for my family and I, to Houston, by way of Amarillo Texas, and originally from Albuquerque New Mexico, I finally feel like I’m home and was able to quickly adapt and soon realize the opportunities and excitement is endless in Houston! Four amazing kids later, two boys, two girls, 20-17-12-5, a super supportive husband, and being a Flight Attendant for nearly 14 years, I realize that I can do what I love and serve my purpose, by helping people any way that I can. I decided to bring the thought of a Doula forefront. I started doing my research and found support, platforms, and networking in the field of birth work, as well as the same here in Houston itself, is absolutely amazing….. I complete my training with DONA International, and Sky Angel Doula is created!!!!

As I jump right in accepting clients, I’m also working towards my DONA certification. Its not a requirement to be certified to be a Doula, but because I chose to do my Birth Doula training through DONA International, they have certification guidelines. I’m currently working with Houston Birth and Baby, as well as a member of the National Black Doulas Association, and assist managing Black and Brown Birth Workers aside the founder Asayah Thomas. Always have a partner and or back up Doula, in case of an emergency and you are not able to arrive at the birth for any reason, in which you go on call 24/7 at 36 weeks gestation of the pregnancy, and that is where Tiara Stanley comes in. Tiara is the owner of A Motherly Embrace Doula Services, as well as one of my favorite clients and fellow birth work partners. We are each other back up, as well as Asayah and I. I will forever continue to stay up to date in the birthing industry. I also plan to extend my services to add at least Post Partum Doula.

I stay pretty busy. A Wife, a Mother, a Flight Attendant and a Doula!! I love what I do, and I love my city!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
With the support that I have, everything has gone pretty smoothly. There have been a few minor challenges along the way of certification. As long as I continue to stay on top of my organizational skills, the business will be great.

Sky Angel Doula – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My company, Sky Angel Doula is primarily birthing support. Often times Doctors and Nurses can be in and out during pregnancy, labor, and delivery. Your Doula will be by your side during these times with support in more ways than one for you and your family, emotionally, physically, and mentally. Never to be a replacement for your spouse/partner or your medical team. I also provide information and resources as needed. As part of your birthing team, I can always be contacted with any questions or concerns. Once 36 weeks have been reached in pregnancy, I go on call 24 hours a day as we prepare for your birth! I’m extremely proud of and love the fact that I am known for the way I am able to connect with people so easily and making you feel comfortable, confident, and easy to talk to. My goal is to make you feel empowered, always reminding you of your strength during this incredible journey. I believe that my natural ability to empathize with one another, being intuitive, and loving, is what sets me apart in the birth work.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
My proudest moment would be the first day I began training in this journey. I knew I was hooked and that this is what I’m here to do for my community. Being involved in birth work is being a part of a movement. I’m here for it! To help people understand and educate one on evidence based pros on having a Doula, including less likely to have pain medication, epidurals, cesareans and more, it’s a great feeling!
