Meet Thi Lam

Today we’d like to introduce you to Thi Lam.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My filmmaking venture started out as just helping out a friend on set. The one role that always caught my eye was the one behind the camera. Although the director managed the set, It was the cinematographer that was making things happen.

Has it been a smooth road?
With the artistic and innovative nature of the industry, it’s a continual challenge to educate myself on new techniques and gear. These make up the tools in my “tool belt” and knowing when and where to apply these options is the art.

The other challenge is the story.

With the barrier of entry into media lowering every day, there is so much content available. On top of that, there is even more through Netflix, Amazon Prime, Vimeo, Youtube, as well as from traditional studios and cable networks as a consumer it’s very easy to be distracted or overwhelmed by the sheer volume of choices.

It’s more important than ever to use the right techniques and tools for effective STORYTELLING and make your film the shining beacon in an ocean of other films.

We’d love to hear more about what you do.
As a cinematographer, also known as the director of photography on set, my primary role is to oversee the camera and lighting departments to actualize the vision of the director. I work on a variety of projects, ranging from corporate, documentaries, narrative, and music videos.

I pride myself on familiarizing myself on the workings of other departments. It makes things more tight-knit with the team on set. My approach is holistic: looking at the overall scope with the resources available and help develop a unique look specific for that project.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Things are moving and changing at such a fast pace I honestly can’t predict where things are going. If you had told me years ago that there would be a platform where everyday people could pitch their ideas to the world so that they could funding it, I wouldn’t have believed you.

Yet today, there are a variety of options. And because of crowdfunding, I think over the next few years there will be even more interesting and niche stories coming out of the indie scene.
