Meet Natasha Henderson of Dorothy’s Delights in Fresno

Today we’d like to introduce you to Natasha Henderson.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Natasha. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have a passion for cooking, each time there was a potluck at work. I would be the person to bring the most food. My co-workers would always express how awesome my food was. I would also host several house parties, dinners, etc.

I would make these large meals and invite my friends and cousins over. After the passing of my Mother in 2015. I was encouraged by my co-workers and family to move forward with a business in honor of my mom.

Has it been a smooth road?
No, it has not been a smooth road. Preparing meals, desserts for other clients can have its ups and downs. Everyone is not going to be pleased with your products. However, for me, I will say that I quickly learn from my mistakes and was able to correct them promptly.

My very first large event. I had a blooper with the chaffing dish. I accidentally placed the food in the pan that was for the warm water. It was a little embarrassing yet a learning experience. When you are running a business, you must be prepared days in advance, and arrive at your event hours in advance and pay attention to all the details.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Dorothy’s Delights story. Tell us more about the business.
The name of my business is Dorothy’s Delights/Handmade Homemade Foods. Dorothy’s Delights is inspired by my Mother, Dorothy Ann Hudson Hopkins. Most people would call my mom Dorothy Ann. All of my friends, family members would love to come to our home, because they knew Dorothy Ann was cooking some delicious meal.

My story began many, many years ago as I would always love to be in the kitchen helping my Mother prepare meals, whether it was for home or another family. My fondest memories are one Sunday morning as a child, my Mother had me to sit at the kitchen table while she got dressed for church. I took it upon myself to grab a piece of brim fish that was leftover from Saturday night. Little did I know this “brim” fish has many small bones. During church, I could not speak and was in serve pain. After my Mom notice the pain I was in, she asked me did I eat something and I nodded my head yes. Mom then quickly realize that I had swallowed a fishbone. Mom took me home to eat a slice of bread, that didn’t work and I eventually ended up in the ER.

My other memory is when my Mother would prepare hot water cornbread on Sunday mornings and I would always sneak in the kitchen when she had her back turned to steal a piece of bread. Just to hear her yell name “Tasha”, stay out of this bread. : )

I am a person that loves to cook and learn new dishes. Dorothy’s Delights specialize in southern comfort food, that is made from scratch. Majority of my meals and desserts are made from my Mother recipe box. The sunflower recipe box consists of recipes from 3 generations. The main dish I am known for is my famous chicken spaghetti, peach cobbler, and pound cakes. I’m very proud of the courage that I have instilled in myself to even start a business, and as of now, my business has just turned a year old. I’m also proud that I learned very early that having a business can be a lot of work and that it takes time and dedication to run a business.

What sets me apart from others, is that I love to cook. I enjoy cooking, and making people smile as they enjoy my meals. I schedule all appointments to meet clients, grocery shopping for my events, cooking all food items and transporting to large events.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
One day, I would like to open a small location in the Houston area, and my hometown. With that, I would bring on a few staff members of my family. My dream is to learn all that I can possibly learn about the catering industry.
