Meet Nikki Edwards of Deep Roots Wellness

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nikki Edwards.

Nikki, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
The beginning of my story starts with my father. My father is a self-made business owner who was mentored by his father in-law when he first moved to Houston as a young man. My father has owned many successful businesses in his lifetime and I watched him passionately pursue his dreams when I was child. He is the one who imparted this entrepreneurial spirit into me and for that I am grateful.

I’ve always wanted to be in business for myself for as long as I can remember. As a child and into adulthood, I can recall daydreaming and spinning ideas for different businesses. When I was a little girl, one of my fathers businesses (Lightning Force Performance) had us traveling all around the United States to racing events. My dad would have a booth set up talking and selling performance car parts to car junkies. As you can imagine, that can get pretty boring for a kid. So, my baby sister and I opened a jewelry business and sold jewelry to the “big girls” who were dragged to these racing events by their fathers, boyfriends, and husbands. That was my first taste of what working for myself was like and it tasted sweet!

It wasn’t until early 2016 that I finally found the field of work that would set me on the path that I’m on now. While working for Dr. Valeska Wells at the Whole Health Center I discovered my passion for integrative and holistic medicine and healing! I was a medical scribe for Dr. Wells for two years and during those two years I witnessed her facilitate healing in her patients by looking for root causes verses treating symptoms. I learned through observation about how you can use more natural modalities such as, diet, aspects of inner healing, and cutting edge science that has helped so many who are suffering with chronic disease. I sat in the corner of her office, taking her notes, and watching in awe of how she approached disease and the transformation that took place in her patients. It became my obsession and I decided I wanted to do the same.

And that’s where we are today! I’m in the middle of finishing up my Holistic Health Coach training and starting to grow a business of my own!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Following ones passions are rarely easy. However, I am incredibly blessed with an amazing support system that keeps me focused on my goals and driven towards my dreams. I have an extremely supportive husband championing me through it all, beautiful friends that have lent their amazing creative talents to help me succeed in areas that I’m not personally strong in, and an older sister who is running her own business to lean on for wisdom and advice.

I’ve experienced fear and anxiety when thinking about actually launching forward. It’s a risk… quitting your day job and investing in a dream. It takes a lot of work, blood, sweat and tears. I’ve always known this to be true, but it was only ever head knowledge. I’m re-learning this truth with good ole real life experience! It’s hard, at times stressful, but I’d rather go through all the hard stuff because I know it leads to the good stuff!

My biggest struggle has been that I felt that I wasn’t educated enough. I never finished college and I believed that would hinder me. That fear held me back for a long time. But with the knowledge I had from my time at Whole Health, and the abundance of people in my community that come to me with questions on health and wellness, I knew I had to take a step forward. The passion to see people well and to make a difference not just in their physical bodies, but in their mind and most importantly their spirit became more powerful than my fear.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
My business, Deep Roots Wellness, is a health and wellness practice! I partner with your everyday kind of person who has been struggling to create significant change for themselves in the area of their health. Whether it’s weight loss, sleep trouble, not being able to break unhealthy habits that they’ve tried to over and over with no success, I provide simple tools to take those steps toward whatever their goals are! I’m known for my joy and my active listening skills. I truly care to know what’s going on in a client’s life. I’m here to listen to their concerns and to lock arms and fight with them towards creating a better future.

Deep Roots Wellness offers solutions that become hope for healing for those who have given up on their ability for a healthy life. There is nothing more rewarding!

I’m set apart as a holistic and integrative health coach because I see the WHOLE person; body, mind, and spirit. I realize that the stress my clients experience at work or in relationships is going to affect their bodies and how they treat them. Things like a broken heart or being unable to release forgiveness are going to affect your wellbeing as a whole. I am committed to creating a safe space for my clients to come as their authentic selves and be vulnerable. I give them the confidence that they are in a space where they are free to do so without judgment.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was a wild child. I was always outside in nature climbing (and falling) out of trees. I was the fastest swimmer in my neighborhood and I was (obviously) highly competitive! I was homeschooled so I was slightly awkward, but hey… it worked for me! Personality wise, I was silly and highly creative. Always writing songs and poems, writing scripts, directing home films, and putting front porch bands together where we sang to our neighborhood. Anything that was creative (besides drawing or painting cause I really sucked at that) I was interested in. I had a fascination with ancient Egyptian culture and the supernatural.

I still love and do all of these things! It brings my life such joy and meaning!
