Today we’d like to introduce you to Nina Spears.
Nina, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
As a child, I never would have guessed I’d be helping families during their pregnancies, births and postpartum journeys as my job. I went to college majoring in Corporate Communication and I had always thought that I would be in the business world working for someone else climbing the corporate ladder. However, after working in the corporate world for a little while and feeling unfulfilled in my career, I decided to look inward and rethink what I wanted to do with my life. That’s when I realized helping people, particularly mothers and children were my true passion. I soon discovered baby planning and doula care and I knew that was the direction I was supposed to head in with my life.
It took me several years after that point to receive my training and certifications. Over time I became certified as a baby planner, birth doula, postpartum doula, childbirth educator, infant massage instructor, Hypnobabies Hypno-Doula, Green Birth Educator, prenatal fitness educator, and more. It’s been almost eight years now and I’ve had the pleasure of helping over 500 families and supporting over 200 women during childbirth. I feel so blessed to have been a part of each of their stories during the most important times of their lives. After helping many families, people started referring to me as “The Baby Chick.”
Three years ago it became clear to me that I needed to try and help more families than just the Houston area. This is when my husband, Brian, and I started our online media company, Baby Chick, named after my working nickname. Baby Chick is an online resource for the modern mom. We cover topics that range from pregnancy, birth, postpartum and parenting. On our site, I’m able to share all of my knowledge, tips, and tricks with other families. We have grown exponentially these past three years and now have almost 100 other contributors to our site. We love being able to share educational, inspiring and uplifting stories and tips to all families that can help and support them during their current stage of parenthood.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
When it comes to work, I’m a true believer that nothing good comes easy. You have to work hard for success, make mistakes, learn and grow. We’ve had ups and downs, have made plenty of mistakes along the way, but ultimately have learned from our missteps, picked ourselves back up and pushed forward.
The biggest challenge that we’ve faced (and continue to face) is not having any professional digital media experience. We’ve had to figure things out on our own without any assistance. We don’t have any investors or mentors to lean on and learn from so we’ve had to rely on our own research and listen to our guts and instincts along the way.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Baby Chick – what should we know?
Baby Chick, named after me–The Baby Chick, is a pregnancy and motherhood online resource for the modern mom. We believe in celebrating this time in a woman’s life and supporting each mother through her parenting journey.
Through our website publication and social media channels, we provide an empowering, educational and uplifting experience to millions of expectant women and mothers by giving them helpful information so that they can make informed decisions for themselves and their family. I have personally supported hundreds of families during their pregnancies, at their births, when they bring their babies home and beyond.
I specialize in baby planning, birth doula care, postpartum doula care, childbirth education, newborn care education and infant massage instruction. Over the years I recognized that many women were not receiving important information to help them feel empowered and more confident during these monumental stages of life. Because of this, I created Baby Chick where women could receive just that–education, inspiration and a smile. I write articles, create videos, do podcasts and more all for the goal of supporting every mother.
What I’m most proud of as a company is that our team truly supports all women and all of their choices. We are unbiased and provide families with information regarding all types of choices so that they can make the best decisions that they feel is right for their family. Online there are plenty of sites where you will find negativity, but Baby Chick is all about positivity and education.
What makes Baby Chick different than other sites is me! As the face and name of the company, I have personal experience as a mother as well as years of professional experience. A lot of other media sites either don’t have a person that you can get to know and relate to or if there is a spokesperson, they don’t have the professional experience that I have of supporting mothers. I am knowledgeable on all types of options related to pregnancy, birth, postpartum and parenting and can provide more words of wisdom and encouragement other than just from my own personal experience as a mother.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My husband deserves so much credit. I think because I’m front and center with our company, I receive all if not most of the praise and recognition when it comes to the success of our business. But honestly, my husband does WAY more than anyone knows.
I may be the person that creates the content, but he’s the one that makes sure that our content is seen. He on our content strategy across our social media platforms, website development, and basically all business innovation and strategies. Our business wouldn’t be a fraction as successful if it weren’t for him.
