Meet Noah Marion

Today we’d like to introduce you to Noah Marion.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I had a wallet in my pocket my younger brother had given me ten years prior. It was handmade, nice leather, poorly designed. I thought “I’ll go buy a new one!” Easier said than done. I looked all over town and scoured the web; to no avail. So I just said “fuck it, I can make whatever I want…” haha little did I know how damn hard it is! I made a wallet, finally, and realized that my sharpened screwdriver, a bent needle and some artificial sinew I found in a box in my garage wasn’t going to cut it. So, in my mom’s garage in Barton Hills, in 2006, I set up shop and, well, what you see is what you get!

Please tell us about your art.
We make all types of leather goods, bags, belts, wallets, and more! But we don’t stop there; we design everything from the ground up packaging, graphics, interiors, furniture, etc. I hope people can start to think about what they buy and how it impacts our world, how each purchase you make is a vote for one thing or the other. I would like people to start voting for sustainability, for less and less trash in the landfills and ultimately spending money on things that last longer and are built better the first time. I want people to know that it’s hard work and it’s very time-consuming to make things and just to be more cognizant of what it is that you use every day.

What do you think about conditions for artists today? Has life become easier or harder for artists in recent years? What can cities like ours do to encourage and help art and artists thrive?
I think it’s a mixed bag: there are a lot more people that seem to be interested in making art, and there’s this whole insta-sensation of maker movement and whatnot so it’s very glamorous looking and it seems like a great way to make a living, but in all honesty it’s tough as hell and take serious perseverance and diligence to make it. Start actually buying art and the things people make don’t just talk about it and then go to AMAZON or TARGET!

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
We can be seen at the new and gorgeous FORTH & NOMAD in the heights as well as our store in Austin, at 2053 South Lamar Blvd. or you can always go online to www.noahmarion.com to check it all out and give us a follow on Instagram @noahmarion
