Today we’d like to introduce you to Olu Gbadebo.
Olu, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’m the son of two Nigerian born immigrants. I grew up having to find the balance between two cultures, my parents traditional Yoruba culture and hip-hop culture. I fell in love with creative writing in the fourth grade. I really started to hone my writing when I was in college because it was there for the first time where I openly express myself to people and realized I had a gift or what I like to call my superpower.
After college I wrote my first poetry book that I published myself titled Memoirs Of A Poet and recorded an audio compilation to go along with the book titled Memoirs Of A Poet: The Evolution Of A Man. I have also directed and shot a few visuals from both my book and audio compilation for people to see.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I would not say I’ve had a smooth road. Everything that I have done up to date has been independent. I’ve invested a lot financially as well as time. From writing to physically printing copies of books, purchasing video recording equipment and learning how to shot and edit.
I thought about getting a book agent and signing a deal with a publishing company and even had offers, but my mentality is I want to own and be the master of everything that I create. The Hardest thing about being independent is it will take time and make you become socially isolated.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about The Olu Project – what should we know?
I started The Olu Project as a platform for me to showcase various projects that I have been working on or have been a part of. I specialize in writing and creating content.
What sets me apart from others is my need to be different and my relentlessness to go after my dream or visions no matter how impossible they may seem. What I am most proud of is my Memoirs Of A Poet project because it took 7 years of reflection, and growth to create it.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I feel dedication and attention to detail is the most important quality to my success. I will work on and critique an idea one thousand times over until I feel the quality is everything that I envisioned.
