Today we’d like to introduce you to Oscar Perez.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’m Salvadorian American, I am the baby of three boys, and I was born and raised here in Houston Texas. Growing up, cooking has always been my passion. My parent has always worked so if I wanted to eat, I had to learn to cook. When I was a junior in Elsik High School, I took a food production class which made my passion for the restaurant industry even greater. I was able to do a full rotation in the restaurant we ran in the high school from being a dishwasher, line cook, to hosting in the front of the house. After graduation, I went to The Art Institute of Houston and graduated with a degree in Culinary Arts, now, I am at The University of Houston in the Hilton college of Hotel Restaurant Management to further my education.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I wish I could say it has all been smooth and easy but it wouldn’t be living without obstacles and bumps in the road. I was raised in Alief, were statistically not everyone is assumed to graduate nor even go off to college, but having my Salvadorian roots made it that much more important to make sure I gave my parents something to make them proud of.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Southern Cadence Cuisine/WellDone Cooking Class story. Tell us more about the business.
So, I work for Southern Cadence Cuisine, and being the umbrella company, we have different branches within, my main job would be a Cooking Instructor, I teach cooking class and help student learn different techniques and concepts for cooking. Working for SCC, I am able to express myself artistically and creatively. Michelle (owner of SCC) flows me to run wild and make sure my opinions count from making menus to adding recipes to our cooking classes. Having that makes me so happy. And not to toot my own horn, but my Chocolate chip cookies and one for the books.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Just having the opportunities to be able to go to school and college to gather knowledge and pass what I have learned to others makes me so lucky. I know there are other individuals who can’t afford half of everything I’m grateful for. Not to mention, I’m able to share my accomplishments with my mother, so just that alone makes me one lucky person.
