Today we’d like to introduce you to Patrick Moran.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
As long as I can remember, I have loved to create images. I spent most of my time in high school and college taking classes in drawing, painting, photography, and sculpture. However, once I left school I found myself doing fewer creative projects. So, in 2015, I decided to do a drawing a day project for a year. It opened my eyes to how much I need to have creativity in my life. Although this project seemed daunting at first, it became easier and easier as each day went by. Not only did I feel more like a working artist, it introduced me to so many other people in my creative communities.
Please tell us about your art.
I have never limited myself to one medium, but I still find myself drawing and painting more than anything else. Most of what I create is based on figure work. I draw a lot of people. However, I do try to avoid direct representation and I will often combine features and poses. I have, also, used elements of abstraction.
I have often asked myself why I create. I have never settled on a solid answer. However, when I was in an art theory class in college I was asked: “what is art?” My answer was, Art, is anything that gives you something you did not have before. That has stayed with me and I believe I create art because it gives me something I didn’t have before I made it.
I rarely start any project with a fully formed concept. Instead, I let the concept come through the creation. That being said, the themes that tend to return over and over again are confusion, love, fear, and connection.
Do you have any advice for other artists? Any lessons you wished you learned earlier?
Create something every day! I do not believe in talent, but if it does exist, passion will beat talent every time.
I wish I had learned just how important it was to do the things you want to be.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
You can find my work on my website or follow me on Instagram @moranillustration. I am working a few shows for 2019 which I will have on my website.
