Today we’d like to introduce you to Patrick Thomas.
Patrick, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Well, one night after a long conversation with God, I asked him if he could reveal my guardian angel to me. I feel like everyone has one, so for some reason, I became extremely fascinated with mine. After pestering God so much about it, I fell asleep and had a dream that my guardian angel presented himself to me. It wasn’t just any angel, however. It was the archangel, Michael. I was so excited about the dream that I began playing around with the idea for a fictional series that included angels/demons. It would also feature a little biblical lore, as well as my perception of what happened during the great battle when Lucifer rebelled against the throne and was cast out of Heaven with his angels. When I was a kid, I used to always imagine myself as a character in my favorite shows. I had a pretty wild imagination (I still do). So, I figured why not create my own series? I played around with some concepts and studied my favorite animated series as well as other fictional works such as Harry Potter and Game of Thrones in order to see how to properly create a great work of fiction with magnificent storytelling and world building. As I continued to study and develop my own series, I began to meet people who believed in my vision and wanted to be a part of it like Ayinde Hall, Kendrick Underwood, Kenneth “Duke” Moore, and so many more. As I continued to meet people who believed in what I was doing, I was constantly writing the series as we prepared to release the first chapter publicly. I officially began writing God Punch June 6th, 2018 and one year later we’ve released our first chapter that can be read for free on the Webtoon app, and I honestly couldn’t be more excited about the project!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Not at all! It’s definitely been a long grueling process, but it’s all been worth it. From the late nights of writing the story and watching Ayinde draw our characters to funding the project out of our own pockets, it’s been very difficult. I truly believe that anything worth having is worth working for and is worth investing in. We’ve faced challenges in regard to funding, making sure the content was protected, and promoting the work. The process has also been extremely nerve-wracking. It’s really frightening to put your feelings on paper and allow other people the opportunity to read and critique it. As a creative, your craft is your pride and joy. It’s the most vulnerable part of you, so allowing yourself to be open with the world is terrifying. Everything is beginning to come together now, however, which is really exciting! We started the God Punch project from ground 0 (literally), and now we’re beginning to pick up steam and gain attention, and I’m honestly so proud of how much it’s grown in such a short period of time!
Please tell us about God Punch.
Well God Punch is a fictional series that focuses on a young man named Percival “Percy” Lionheart II. It’s a story of action, adventure, tragedy, and triumph. I am the writer and creator for the series so my role is creating the characters and plot while incorporating pieces of biblical history and lore and making sure everything connects in a way the readers will never see coming! My specialty, in my opinion, is storytelling. I absolutely love a good story, and I love writing one even more! And that’s exactly what God Punch is. It’s a story that I hope one day will be regarded as the greatest work of fiction ever! I’m most proud of the project’s growth and how well we’re being received by people! I think what sets this project apart from others would be the diverse cast we’re incorporating. Representation matters and as a young man who grew up watching superheroes I craved to see a character who looked like me on the screen and I think that’s what makes God Punch special. We want to incorporate as many races, cultures, ethnicities, and sexual orientations as we possibly can. We want everyone to witness our series and see someone that they can relate to and follow their journey as they interact with Percy and the rest of our main cast.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would’ve taken the project more seriously once I originally thought of the concept. I started playing around with ideas years ago when I had the dream about my guardian angel. If I could go back in time, I’d definitely tell myself, “Hey! You got something good here. Start working on it now because in a few years you’re gonna be obsessed with it!”
