Meet Paula Ruiz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Paula Ruiz.

Paula, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am a graduate in Speech Therapy and also have a Master in Business and Administration with a specialization in Marketing. At the age of 15, I begun working as a hand model, performing publicity work where only my hands were visible. During that time, I had contact with various photographers, with big names in Brazilian publicity, who are recognized and awarded worldwide. During in numerous photoshoots and filming, I was always observing the lighting and the protocol being used.

Over twenty years later, I became apprehensive with the possibility of my workload to decrease due to the fact that my hands were aging and I began to trace a “plan B,” connecting photography with the experience I was having with children through my five-year-old daughter. I completed a specialized photography course to become more technical, and while working as a model, I could talk to the photographers, who helped me to choose for the best equipment and to perfect my photos. At that time, the social media boomed and turned out to be my greatest source of exposure.

Everything came together: as my pictures evolved, I began a new challenge. I started covering children’s parties and expanding into the corporative world, family shoots, weddings, pregnancy shoots, newborns and my passion, birth photography.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Everything happened very naturally, and eventually, I achieved recognition working in children’s parties and corporate events in Brazil, to the point of having to hire a team of workers to be able to meet the big demand. Of course, the more I worked, the more I needed to keep myself up to date, attending workshops, classes, and keeping my equipment state of the art.

After five years working in Brazil, I received the news that my husband was being transferred to Houston, where we have been living now for the past four years. Although I had experience working as a photographer, I had to restart my professional life in the US, introducing myself to that market to get new clients and understand their way of working and particularities, adapting the way I should be doing business.

Paula Ruiz Photography – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I’m specialized in family, pregnancy, social events, and corporative photography. Thus, my interest is human beings in different situations in their lives.

I have a lot of pleasure working with people and developing interpersonal relationships. I believe in the importance of respecting the individual characteristics of each job I perform. For these reasons, I try to ensure I understand the expectations and profile of my clients.

In addition, I continue to study in order to keep myself updated, and always attentive to the new image treatments and new positionings. The photographer’s way of viewing the world is what makes them special. I am happy doing what I love, and for this reason, I believe I have a joyful and positive way of looking the world through my camera lens in a way that makes all the difference!

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I consider my job gratifying in many aspects. I’m always happy when I deliver pictures and check people’s first reactions, or even later on social media.

I’m always proud of giving a touch of magic by editing the pictures I take, transforming them into “my work of art.”

My work deals with emotions. Photographing events and people, creating memories and life stories to eternity.
