Meet Rachel Mayo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Mayo.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Rachel. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Growing up, I always had a camera readily available, whether it was a tiny, point and shoot or a disposable camera. You know the ones you drop at your local pharmacy to be developed? I always had those on hand. To this day, I have boxes of old photos from years of snapping. Once I got married and had my first child, I knew I’d need a better quality method of documenting all of our family moments. My husband purchased my first DSLR as a Valentine’s Day gift and I started photographing my family and sharing the images on my social media feeds. My friends quickly began to ask if I could photograph them and their children. I realized just how much I loved documenting everyone’s memories and started my business plan!

Has it been a smooth road?
I believe that life, in general, will never be a smooth ride 100% of the way. Starting a business always presents its own set of challenges. My biggest struggle has been and still is, working from home with kids in tow. They are, and forever will be, my top priority and that can be tough when it comes to making deadlines. Aside from that, I have never had an entrepreneur’s mindset. I’m an artist first and learning all there is to know about working for myself is like stepping into a whole new world. I first started out thinking that I’d just be taking cute photos and sending them to clients. I couldn’t have been more wrong! I had to learn marketing, accounting, social media analysis, branding, and the list could go on.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I am a freelance photographer and I specialize in lifestyle and documentary photography. My interest lies in capturing pure moments as they unfold, as opposed to the traditional “pose and smile” session. Those are still great! I just believe that we need a way to look back on all of the in-between moments that help to tell our WHOLE story.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love Houston’s diversity! Each corner I’ve turned, I encountered a new type of people. Along with that vast diversity comes an overload of humans haha! Houston is most certainly overpopulated but that could be a plus, in that there is so much opportunity.
