Today we’d like to introduce you to Reagan Johnson.
Reagan, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I have been singing since I was eight years old -my first performance was for my parent’s friends. They paid me to sing “Before He Cheats” by Carrie Underwood on the desk in my dad’s office. After that, I began vocal training with a local vocal teacher, Jeannie Bryant, who helped me to get involved with Houston competitions and festivals over the next few years. Shortly after I began training, my family and I moved overseas to Dubai when I was 10. While I was there I trained with a brilliant classical vocal teacher and brought a little country music to the Middle East.
After 4 years, my family moved back and settled in Sugar Land. Since then, I have been writing and recording my own music, and I recently released an EP (short album) on iTunes and Spotify. One of my songs from the EP, Stand By My Man, was nominated for a Grammy in the first round for “Best Country Solo Performance” and this song has reached #4 on the U.K. Hot Disc Carts. I have enjoyed being on the charts in the U.K. and I’ve had great success as I was nominated as one of the Top 5 International Acts.
My song “There’s Only One” was nominated for a Hollywood Music in Media Award in 2017. Attending the awards was such a great experience, I loved meeting so many talented people! I am currently in my third year at Belmont University in Nashville writing and recording today. My music is evolving daily, and I hope to be releasing new music within the next year. I travel between Nashville and Houston for performances and school, and coming home to Houston is something I always look forward to.
Has it been a smooth road?
I have been extremely blessed to have an amazing family that has supported me throughout my journey. When my family moved to Dubai, I had only been taking vocal lessons for about two years and I was afraid that I would lose what I had learned.
Thankfully I found an amazing classical vocal coach in Dubai. Country Music in the Middle East was scarce, but whenever I sang in public, everyone loved it, I was able to bring a little country music to Dubai! I am really thankful for that experience because it taught me a lot about my music.
One of the biggest challenges in the music industry is the immense amount of talent in the country music industry. However, I am a determined Texas girl and I believe that there is room for all of us in the industry, and nothing is going to stop me from pursuing my dreams.
Coming up with new and original ideas for my music is not always easy, but it is something that myself and my family have always pushed me to do.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I am a 20-year-old singer and a songwriter! I love to perform anywhere and everywhere, I have performed at weddings, receptions, local competitions, festivals, sporting events, NASA and many other venues! My proudest accomplishment was when my original song “Stand By My Man” was nominated for a Grammy!
One of my favorite performances was when I sang the National Anthem at the Houston Texan’s game, and after JJ Watt shook my hand and told me I did a great job… best moment ever. I also had the opportunity to perform at the rotary NASA awards, where I met astronauts and Bill Nye The Science Guy!
All of my music is really relatable; I have songs about leaving home, relationships with friends and family, and some sassy songs too. I put my heart and soul in to everything that I do with my music, and I am thankful that I get to call this my job. All of my songs are available on Spotify and Apple Music to stream!
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love everything about Houston except for some of the really hot days in the summer! I am proud to be a Houstonian. From the shopping, diversity, lakes, parks, murals, food, theatre, and parks, Houston has it all.
Houston also has so much opportunities for my music with lots of places to sing my music and perform.
As a city, we’ve overcome and accomplished so much recently, and I am proud of how our city came together to help everyone out after hurricane Harvey. We truly have genuinely good people in Houston that care about each other.
