Meet Real Estate Professional Jamie Burton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamie Burton.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Jamie. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
A close friend of mine began a career in real estate years ago and would always encourage me to do so, but being that I already wore so many hats I didn’t really put much thought into it because I didn’t have the money or time to go to school. However, after losing everything including my house and car during a flood in 2016, I realized that life can change in the blink of an eye so I may as well go after the seemingly impossible. Shortly after the flood, I separated and eventually divorced. I didn’t allow that to stop me but instead used my trials as fuel to push me forward. I’ve been a real estate agent now for two years and the rewards of helping people find the residential and commercial properties of their dreams is worth every sacrifice I made to get my license.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely has not been smooth. Getting licensed was a challenge because, at the time, I went to real estate school, my house was a total loss, my car got flooded, I was living in a 525 sq ft hotel room with my five kids and husband at the time. It was stressful but I was in survival mode. After getting my license, I struggled because I lacked confidence. I didn’t know how to really market myself in such a saturated field. Additionally, I just felt like there was so much I didn’t know because a classroom setting just doesn’t prepare you for real-life in the field.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am a real estate professional, licensed in the state of Louisiana to assist with both residential and commercial real estate transactions. I specialize in helping first time home buyers move forward with their real estate goals. My objective is to help buyers and/or sellers be both inspired and informed during real estate transactions. I don’t see clients as commission checks, therefore, I place their best interest above anything else, even if it means I make less. I am most proud of the fact that I play a small role in helping business owners and first time home buyers fulfill their dreams by making one of the greatest investments they’ll ever make in a lifetime. That’s pretty humbling. I call myself “The Really Real Realtor” because I give myself permission to be authentic. I am professional and operate in excellence in all my endeavors but I am true to who I am. I think that draws people to me. I am not a salesperson and I don’t like to come off like that. People tell me often that they feel as if I’m “real” and people need to feel like they can trust you when they choose to do business with you.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Oh wow! This is hard! It’s a tie between two moments lol! I was absolutely so proud after closing my very 1st commercial deal at $270,000 BELOW asking price. However, before becoming a Realtor, I was a Social Worker providing case management to children in Therapeutic Foster Care. I ended up helping a young man who was raised in Therapeutic Foster Care purchase his first home for his family. How beautiful is that? My passion for helping others discover their capacity to thrive is the reason I chose a career in Social Work, and I can still fulfill that passion in my career in Real Estate!
