Richard, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Texas Treads is the sister company to International Flooring.
Texas Treads is a wood shop I created about 10 years ago to manufacture wood stair treads for the custom builders in Houston that I service with flooring trough International Flooring.
Our custom stair treads soon where popular among the Houston custom builders because we made the process simple to them and custom to meet the large quality homes they were building.
Manufacturing wood stair tread left a lot of wood cuts that where not usable for other stair treads, so we started making cutting board to use the scrap.
Cutting boards soon grew to wood countertops, and that is now our most successful manufacturing product, our walnut countertops our a joy to sell and make, the look in my customers face is priceless, they just love them.
We also make solid wood table for restaurants.
I love working with wood and custom creating unique countertops to my happy clients.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Manufacturing in the US is never an easy process. In order to sell at the prices I need to sell, I have to produce a custom hi quality product that is unfortunately out of range to most.
Texas tread has been mostly a labor of love than profit, we do make ends meet, but I rely mostly on her sister company International Flooring for my livelihood..
Ultimately, both companies feed leads and customer to each other and contributes to sales. Machinery is expensive so most wood shops require several years to break even.
I am putting more effort in marketing trough the website and social media, and it is working, in the last year my sales from website traffic have double.
Texas Stair Treads – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We are mostly known for our wood countertops.
There is only a few company that makes wood countertop in the Houston, Dallas, Austin area.
Our quality manufacturing and finishing is the best I have seen.
I know my countertops are beautiful, my clients confirm it every time I deliver one.
Our showroom is different from any other wood shop I have ever been in, Our showroom is very upscale and it looks more like a gallery than a wood shop.
I think our showroom does wonders in setting the standards and quality of our products.
When a client call for a quote, my goal is to get them to come to the showroom, because once they see our showroom and our shop, the conversion rate jumps to about 90% “Amazing.”
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Deliver wows to my clients and sale enough to take care of all my employees and my family.
Success to me is also enjoying your work, enjoy the contributions we make to our customer with our products.
Dedicate enough time at home with the wife and children. “They grow way to fast.”
