Meet Rickale West of Roxy Wuz Here Art in Northwest Houston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rickale West.

Rickale, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I am originally a Dallas, TX native, I moved to Houston in 2008 to study at Texas Southern University. My formal education steered my career path in a corporate direction. However, I have always had a love for all things art, be it writing, music, or simply doodling to pass time. I began my journey as a self-taught artist, which has blossomed into the brand “Roxy Wuz Here Art.” My work is created with intention to express mood or thoughts about things in the world, things I have experienced or simply admire. As an artist, it is important to me that viewers can form a connection as well as develop their own interpretations while understanding my perspective.

I don’t desire to bind myself to one style of creativity, for I believe everything around us is art and we have the freedom to interpret it however it suits us in the moment. “I want viewers to see my work and see me.” My motto is “make sure they know it was you” This motto helps inspire the tag Roxy Wuz Here.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
If I had to say anything about the challenges I have faced along the way, first and foremost would be courage. I initially lacked the courage to even share my work, let alone be motivated to turn it into a brand. Once I got to a place of feeling more assure of my work, then there was having enough time to create or work on art. I would be bursting with ideas and have no time to work on them due to everyday life and my full-time job at the time. So I didn’t possess that consistency I knew it would take to be successful. Also, as a novice in the art industry starting out and not making many sales, it can become costly to secure materials and marketing needed to get your work out there.

We’d love to hear more about Roxy Wuz Here Art.
We are an art company specializing in original art on canvas and art inspired merchandise. What I am most proud of is the effort we make to help “Art Meet Function.” Many people are interested in art but oftentimes find it to be too expensive or out of their budget. It is meaningful to me that everyone is able to connect with and enjoy my art no matter their budget and with that came the idea to create custom products that are detailed with original art created by myself. We are turning art into functional and affordable merchandise. For example, We offer a travel mug, an art lover who is on the go can take their beverage and art with them anywhere they are going.

I would say I am known for my tag “Roxy Wuz Here.” Roxy is a family nickname given by my late grandmother when I was just an infant. For as long as I can remember, I would doodle or leave notes wherever I had been with the phrase “Roxy Wuz Here.” the more passionate I became about my art, the more it became imperative to me to tag my art with that phrase.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite childhood memories were traveling the scenic route all over Texas and other states with my mom and sister.
