Today we’d like to introduce you to Ricky Ortiz.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Started drawing at a very young age, took art programs in school, graduated from HSPVA in 2003, and continued my journey through college art classes. On my own time I learned a few different mediums and progressed on my skills and techniques. I’ve won a couple of awards because of my artwork, have had my work featured in independent films, and have painted a few murals in town with a couple of more coming this summer. I love the beauty of art but I’ve always been fascinated in the darker, more intense side of it. In particular, I’ve always been inspired by the works of H.R. Giger, Zdzisław Beksiński, Francis Bacon, and Clive Barker, who I’ve recently met. To this day my work jumps between realism and surrealism and continues to grow.
Please tell us about your art.
I work mostly with acrylics and airbrush on canvas. I try to find a center point between beauty, horror, and fantasy. I want my viewers to be captured by my images. The type of reaction is unpredictable sometimes. As long as the audience is captured and taken out of this space and into the one I’ve created, that’s what matters most; a temporary sense of being somewhere else away from here. Aside from canvases, I’ve been working on body painting and FX make up for several years now. I’ve also been commissioned for various genres and styles of art, such as murals and portraits.
As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
Keep doing what you love, keep practicing and dedicating yourself to your skills. There’s always room for growth and bettering yourself.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
I’m currently associated with the growth of 45 Art Center in Southeast Houston and make event appearances around Houston with live art demonstrations.
