Today we’d like to introduce you to Ron Willis.
Ron is the local owner of the Handyman Matters Franchise covering Houston and surrounding suburbs. Ron has worked for Fortune 500 companies as an Operations Manager for the last 25 years. He received a BBA from the University of Houston while concentrating on Operations Management. Ron developed a strong continuous improvement mindset working with successful companies, and has transferred this knowledge and experience to his own company. This experience has helped him change customer service for the handyman industry
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has been a struggle for us the first three years, even though we are a franchise. There are no scripts on how to run a successful business and we definitely made some bad decisions. However, the difference with our company is that we have a continuous improvement mindset. We see process failures as an opportunity and we constantly work to learn from our mistakes and to improve our business. We have just entered our 4th year as a business and I’m confident that we are on the right track.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Handyman Matters Clear Lake – what should we know?
Our vision in Handyman Matters is simple:
• We offer repair, remodeling, and maintenance programs for homes and businesses.
• We are a trustworthy, reliable and skilled handyman service that solves problems.
• We are the company that our customers call when no one else will help them.
• We communicate well and will answer the phone when our customers call.
• We show up on time (not time blocks) and offer friendly and professional services.
• We guarantee/warranty our work and we clean up after the job is completed.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I rely on a small support group. Fortunately, I have a very supportive spouse and she is my sounding board for big business decision.
Handyman Matters provides regional support. We are welcome to utilize as much or as little support as needed. I’m not a fool. My regional support (Mr. Frank Foti) has 30+ years of experience as a small business owner and I rely on him often. I consider him a friend and reliable business resource. My best friend from H.S. is a CFO and provides financial support and guidance.
For 2018:
My next steps are to join a local group of small business owners so we can share experiences and work together to strengthen and grow our businesses.
I am planning to join a local chamber of commerce this year. I tried my local BNI chapter and this was not a good fit for me.
