Today we’d like to introduce you to Ronnie West.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I start drawing when I was around 7 years old. Then my 6th drawing teacher inspired me to be an artist. I didn’t start taking it seriously until high school and only started to get really good when I started college. I also only started painting last year so I can transfer my drawing skills into it.
Please tell us about your art.
I make abstract expression and surreal drawings and paintings. I make them out of acrylic, oil, graphite, charcoal, pastel, conté, ink and mix them altogether too. These materials are good for bringing out subconscious images when pushed across any surface. I don’t use inspiration to make my work. The message though is don’t has a linear perception. I hope my work makes people feel something on a personal level and inspires them to be more expressive beyond modern trends. The only thing that should be known about my work is it’s not for fun or a hobby.
Given everything that is going on in the world today, do you think the role of artists has changed? How do local, national or international events and issues affect your art?
No, the role artists play has been the same since the first art was made, it’s only expanded today. Art is to record and reflect a group or society and push culture forward. Local, national, or international events effect my artwork all the same, by reflecting the deceiving and selfish acts of modern day companies, politics, or individual actions with intentions of personal gain.
