Meet Sarah Austin of Fig Tree Accessories

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Austin.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My passion has always been designing and creating unique things. As a child, I started hand making jewelry from pieces I collected from bead stores and my mother’s and grandmother’s old jewelry.

In 2011, I decided to stay home with my three children (after a 15-year career as a buyer for several department and specialty stores). My hobby started to grow and by the end of 2012, I began to do more markets and home shows. I set up a website in September of 2012 and then began selling to boutiques in the Spring of 2013 (as of 2017 Fig Tree is in over 150 stores including the Four Seasons).

In 2014 I started designing a handbag line and the Fig Tree continued to grow. This November I opened a Fig Tree Accessories show in Rice Village (this has always been one of my biggest dreams).

Has it been a smooth road?
There will always be challenges and obstacles and I always remember this quote when I face a challenge… “If you can find a path with no obstacles, it probably doesn’t lead anywhere”. The time commitment to a new store and all of the shows can be a huge challenge (especially for a family).

My passion for design and building Fig Tree offsets any challenges I have faced. My favorite quote has always been “Do what makes your soul shine”.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
The Fig Tree Jewelry line consists of handmade pieces with vibrant semi-precious and precious stones. The line is often recognized by its delicate designs and vibrant stones that channel a boho-chic vibe. The Fig Tree Handbag line consists of handmade leather, python, and cowhide pieces accented with stones, tassels, or other unique components. I design clutches, cross bodies, totes, hobos, and wallets.

In addition to our jewelry, accessories, and handbags I feature clothing to complement the jewelry and handbags. We opened our store in Rice Village in November 2017 (6132 Village Parkway -next to Le Peep) and have a pop-up shop in Village Antiques (1200 Blalock Suite 350). My goal is to create a vibrant, feminine, unique brand that has a light-hearted bohemian spirit. Fig Tree Accessories is inspired both by nature and amazing women in my life.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Houston has always been my home for over 20 years and I can’t imagine being anywhere else. Rice Village has been my favorite shopping spot in Houston since I moved here in 1996. I love the uniqueness of the Village. You get a nice mix of small boutiques and larger big name stores. This was the perfect fit for Fig Tree Accessories.
