Today we’d like to introduce you to Skylar McCall.
Skylar McCall a.k.a. DJ Skilarioux (sky-la-ru) is a 21 years old college student, music enthusiast, and radio personality born and raised in Tallahassee, Florida and known for the hometown of T-pain. Raised in Florida, my music influences were all down south legends and my mom was a music head as well. Moving to Houston from Tallahassee in 2015 it was a big change and effected me musically in a positive way. I began DJ’ing September of 2016 my freshman year at Prairie View A&M University.
Before that, I made beats in high school but music has just been my passion since I was so young. Almost three years in, I have accomplished so much and now has aspirations to soon leave my mark in the Houston scene. I like to call myself the soon new female Dr.Dre.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Definitely hasn’t been smooth one hell of a ride actually. It took almost a year and a half for people to just take me seriously and not just “another female” DJ. I can say once I realized I really wanted this for myself, the respect I wanted started to be earned instead of given which I rather have it that way. I can say that I’ve faced discrimination and been underestimated for my gender. It only made me say “Ok Rioux, show them you really are the 1, not a 2 or 3” ever since then, my personal self-doubt went away when I knew I was talented just applied pressure on myself more. Three years in and I’ve had people admire me, it truly is amazing.
DJ Skilarioux – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from others?
DJ Skilarioux has become a brand in its own right and I hope it keeps flourishing. I can say what I do best is feel my crowd out effectively to keep the flow going and always just right. I am rare, my nitch is that with me knowing every genre my crate-digging goes beyond measures. Like Bill Nye, if he was a music enthusiast and vibe curator with heels!
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I define success as achieving your own individual goals and really getting it out of your own efforts. Success is really earned. I know people who have success but do not deserve it. They just get in to fit in by just knowing people and having the clout, of course. That’s the easy way to me. The markers I look out for are how much did I contribute to my success and how much of it was just good fortune (blessed). Real success makers having a certain glimmer of satisfaction (period!).
