Meet Steve Silver of Jewelry Appraisal Services

Today we’d like to introduce you to Steve Silver.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Steve. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My love affair with jewelry began the summer after my junior year in college when I reluctantly went to work at my uncle’s newly purchased jewelry store. Having to give up my summer job selling luggage, I wasn’t sure about working behind a jewelry counter. Immediately my fears were allayed as an insatiable desire to know more, learn more and study more about gemology took over. “I had planned to go to law school until I fell in love with jewelry in 1978. I began to read about diamonds and colored stones and watches and manufacturing and couldn’t get enough information. There was so much to learn.” I ran the family’s business for 17 years, taking the store from 1,500 square feet to 10,000 square feet before retiring in 1994. Needing a break from the long hours and tremendous demand of retail left me longing for something different. With a Gemological Institute of America gemology degree in one hand and a passion for jewelry in the other, I began to consider the appraisal industry. I opened JewelryAppraisal Services in 1994 and I have not looked back.

Has it been a smooth road?
I had to hit the ground running at first I met with retail jewelers, insurance companies, accounting firms, and lawyers. I spent a lot of time at clients offices and stores just to get the ball rolling. Early in the business, we were able to secure appraisal business from a 450 store retail chain and a national pawn shop chain which really helped the business. I was also teaching a state insurance course on jewelry and appraisals to insurance adjusters and claim representatives.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I think Houston is a great city for business with a variety of industry and very diversified population. The only negative part of a big city is the traffic.
