Styles x Yaya, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started doing hair at the early age of thirteen. Every day after school, I would come home to my sixteen years old cousin doing hair in the living room and every day I watched her. I was so inspired by her entrepreneurship spirit at a young age. I asked her to teach me how to do hair and she told me no because she said that she didn’t want me to steal her clients. That’s when I started to cultivate myself as a self-taught hairstylist. I began to practice on dolls, then my family. By the time I was fifteen I had consistent clients. I, simultaneously, went to cosmetology school while I was in high school. After I graduated from school, I utilized my cosmetology skills to help work my way through college. I worked fashion shows and other events. The demand for makeup artist increased swiftly at my university. When people asked me if I could do their makeup I said yes and just learned along the way. Shortly after that, I took on a job in the mall as a photographer. This is how I learned to create a one-stop-shop culture within my brand. I officially launched Styles x Yaya as a brand in January 2017. Now, I’ve serviced over 450+ clients in over 20 cities, domestically. As I grow, I plan to enhance my brand by offering more services while creating more accessibility to each service for each client.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Anything that is worked for comes with a few obstacles along the way. I have had plenty of barriers that I have had to overcome. Business-wise…I have had trouble building a consistent team, finding a good mentor that understands the art of intangible reciprocity and balancing the various sectors of my company. Personally, I have had troubles with trusting friends to help run my business, using the word “no”, and preferring to be a self-taught/solo entrepreneur. Although I have had various challenges, I have learned to be stern with those that I allow to work around me. I’ve learned to only say yes to the things that benefit me, just as much as I benefit it. I have also learned to work smarter and not harder. Time is the most cherished commodity in the world. I cannot waste it. Overall, the mastering of my business and personal life is an ever-present task that I enjoy every day of my life. It comes in stages and I am excited to have experienced each milestone.

Styles x Yaya is a luxury beauty brand that offers services in hair, makeup. Photography and more! We are THE one stop shop for all things beauty. Our mission is to provide luxury on-demand beauty services to maximize the self-perception of our clientele-through every beauty avenue possible. We are known for our luxury mobile experience. Yep, you heard right we come to our clientele! We have serviced clients in their homes, jobs, churches, schools, at event, weddings, birthday parties photoshoots, fashion shows, and even in a car. We specialize in giving our clients a luxury experience without compromising convenience. I am most proud of singlehandedly servicing over 450+ clients in over 20+ cities nationwide- since our official launch in January 2017.
I am also proud of our philanthropic efforts within our community. We have created, organized and executed a free hair drive for Hurricane Harvey Survivors, various back-to-school giveaways, a 12 Days of Christmas Giveaway, quarterly free services for a client in need, and more! As an owner, I am committed to be a blessing to those around me. I try not to compare. Of course, I’ve done a S.W.A.T. analysis but I like to focus on myself. If I had to say…what sets me and my company apart is my devotion for what I do. It’s my passion for helping others. It’s my love for making my creative ideas become a reality. I was born to be a boss. I’m just living out my destiny.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
As a person, I strive for success. As a business owner, I strive to create opportunities for others to succeed. With any success comes obstacles that one must overcome. The most important quality to my success is my trust in God. I truly believe that His purpose for my life is more than I can even fathom. Times when I feel discouraged or down… I pray. My relationship with God is the source of my strength, determination, work ethic and passion.
