Meet Susan Bradshaw of Lone Star Chiropractic in Galleria

Today we’d like to introduce you to Susan Bradshaw.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Susan. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My interest in chiropractic started when I was in high school. A counselor suggested chiropractic as a profession so I went to volunteer for one in town. I quickly fell in love with the profession, Patients were happy, felt better and the overall environment was welcoming. As an added benefit I also started receiving chiropractic adjustments and noticed I didn’t have as many headaches and back aches.

I went to Chiropractic school at Palmer College of Chiropractic West in San Jose, California. During school I had the honor of being selected one of a few students to travel to Brazil with the College to provide care in local hospitals, and meet students of a new extension of our chiropractic school.

After graduating in 1998, I worked in Sacramento area, worked a few years in Germany and in Tucson, Arizona. I finally made my way to Houston, opening Lone Star Chiropractic.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In the very beginning some of the struggles were understanding how to communicate with patients, setting expectations and care that made sense for each person. Not everyone is the same or responds the same to care. Learning to listen, adapt and modify is crucial to a patient’s success.

Over the years, experience helps patient care become easier, then it’s on to the next biggest struggle: running a business. I think any healthcare provider feels the same, we spend years learning our profession and then jump out and start a business. I think I underestimated the overall toll it takes on someone, it’s hard to not think about work or feel guilty when I’m not in the office. The importance of downtime, rest and taking care of myself is a slow learning curve but I’m getting there.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Lone Star Chiropractic – what should we know?
Our care is focused on each individual and their personal goals, and I take a lot of pride in delivering that every time with each patient. I think sometimes patients become frustrated when they feel they are just another number, their provider doesn’t listen and they don’t end up with the treatment they expected or the outcomes they wanted. We sit and talk to each patient to figure out what they want out of care so our expectations are the same.

We recently went through training to become Certified Posture Exercise Professionals. The majority of what we see in our office are people who sit all day, which can have negative effects on your overall health. It seems every day there is more research and information on what happens to your body physically and mentally from sitting. So in the office we are working to improve posture, and we also do lunch and learns at companies to help their employees with tips and stretches they can do at their desk every day.

In the past few years we’ve had the honor to be on local TV to discuss backpack safety and posture. In 2016 we were voted “Best Chiropractor” by the Houston Press readers.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
To always learn about new techniques or patient care, and to talk less and just listen.
