Meet Sylvia Boyd of Light of Hope Counseling and Consultation

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sylvia E. Boyd, LPC

Thanks for sharing your story with us Sylvia. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I like to call myself a country and down to earth Texas- Louisiana girl. As Beyoncé says “my daddy Texas, my momma Louisiana” something like that. LOL! I have lived in both places and those experiences have created the person I am today. Those experiences, good and not so good, also inspired me to become a psychotherapist.

I have always wanted to do something in the helping profession. The question was how was I going to accomplish this goal? I started off wanting to become a child psychologist. However, life and lessons took me a different route which resulted in me becoming a Licensed Professional Counselor. My passion to become a psychotherapist comes from overcoming many obstacles during childhood and some in adulthood as well. I am a SURVIVOR of many things and one day, I will eventually tell “My Story”. I do believe my purpose is to help children and adults build resilience, hope, and strength to overcome any obstacle they might have and that is my goal with LOHC.

Has it been a smooth road?
I am what they call a MIPP (mother in private practice). I changed it a bit to BOSSMIPP though. (Smile) With that being said, it has not been a smooth road and I am still in the learning phase of perfecting my business and juggling other responsibilities. As they say, you learn something new everyday. I decided to start a part-time private practice two years ago when my son was three while still working for a local school district. It is sometimes difficult to balance being a wife, mother, having a full-time job, and being a CEO of a private practice business. However, I am taking it one day at a time and learning to balance and manage all of the above. I’m no stranger to adversity, but I’ve learned with perseverance, you can overcome the most difficult challenges.

Teletherapy is unique and the most convenient way to reach clients who cannot travel, can be conducted from the comfort of their home or safe space. Teletherapy can also be implemented using any device with internet access. During the current COVID-19 pandemic, social distancing has become the new norm. It is essential that mental health clinicians are accessible in a safe way at this time.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Absolutely, Houston is the fourth largest city in the U.S. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), 1 in 5 adult Texans will experience a mental health concern at some point, and over 20% of children 9-17 have a diagnosed mental illness. With that in mind, we have a melting pot of many different people with various mental health needs. Mental health awareness is also becoming more prevalent and people are seeking help. Therefore, there is an increased need for mental health clinicians in the Houston area. Houston is a great place to start a mental health private practice.
