Today we’d like to introduce you to Terry Collier.
Terry – please share your story with us.
Mojo’s is the idea of Mahlon and Millie Dennis and myself. Mahlon had been a customer of mine for many years. Mahlon is your classic rags to riches story. He came from a poor Pennsylvania town to graduating with a Doctorate in Ceramic Engineering too owning his own company. I have been in the restaurant industry for over 20 years working for Garfield’s, Hero’s Sports, Tortugas and Hooters. Mahlon approached me with the idea of opening a restaurant and basically asked me if I could make it happen. After many conversations with his lovely wife Millie, we decided to do it. We chose an area close to where we both live and moved on with our plans. We now have a restaurant that specializes in craft beers and have been operating for over 6 years.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Opening a restaurant is never smooth. I have opened over 30 in my life. The first two years we went through many growing pains. Turning over new staff, unexpected equipment break downs, finding efficient venders are just a few of the problems. But, the best news in this industry is tomorrow is a new day.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Mojo’s Sports Grille – what should we know?
We try to be different from any restaurant around us. We have 61 taps of diverse craft beer. We are kid, family and dog friendly. We have a huge outdoor patio with games for adults and children. We serve crawfish (while they are in season). I have made signature fresh taco menu with handmade sauces. This is a perfect finger food for craft beer drinkers. We hire a clown every Tuesday with free face painting and balloon art for our kids eat free night. I imported a pizza oven from Italy to serve pizza to hungry families and sports teams. We donate to the Humble School District and to the Lake Houston Conservation Society (our golf tournament is there fund raiser). By far our signature food item is our Mojo Burger, it’s spicy and delicious.
