Meet Tiara Nash

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tiara Nash.

Hi Tiara, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’ve always been the friend, cousin, or niece that knew how to do hair. I’ve been doing hair for fun since I was in middle school. Never in a million years did I want to do it as a career. I always kept it as a side hustle. I went to LSU(GEAUX Tigers!💜💛) to obtain my degree in Animal Science; which ultimately led me to work in Animal Science. I graduated in 2014 (and of course I was doing hair as a side hustle there). When I moved back home and got hired to start my career, I quickly found out how little I was going to make. Still, I wanted to pursue my field. On the flip side to make extra money, I started joining Facebook hair groups, like Ballers On a Budget, to help build my clientele. I would travel far out like Humble, Katy, and Spring to get my skills up and portfolio together. From there, I went from having to schedule on my personal to needing a formal booking site. My husband kept asking me who I wouldn’t go full time.

For whatever reason, I just couldn’t. 2018-2019, I started to feel underappreciated at work. At this point, I was booked practically everyday doing one client after my 9-5 Monday to Friday; and fully booked in Saturdays. I had gained a small following on Instagram. My husband kept pushing me to potentially consider doing hair full time. By this time, I was matching my work salary doing hair full time. Corona quarantine gave me the chance to test it out. By the time they asked me to come back to work, I was ready to quit. My husband and I went into business together. Him being the primary investor and I took care of the hair knowledge/ product quality. Our hairline, selling both raw Indonesian and virgin hair, took over four years to solidify a trustworthy hair vendor. It has been a blessing to have someone that pushes me creatively out of my shell; as well as my clients, who consistently required new styles to grow my style menu. Now here I am. Consistently growing.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Being an entrepreneur is never easy. There were many late nights-doing hair until 2 am. Switching over to full-time, there is a different level of anxiety to fulfill those slots. It does give a different level of hustle and push. Outside of providing services, my husband became my business partner building our hair supply brand. It took us three years to find a viable and trustworthy hair vendor. Along that route, he financially contributed all of the funds to stock our inventory. We lost thousands of that being burned. In 2018, we found our vendors for both RAW and VIRGIN hair. We have had too Quality nonstop ever since with over 140 orders since 2020.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in doing protective hairstyles on all hair textures-specifically natural hair. This includes braids, twists, minimal leave out Sewins, and now Glueless wigs. I am most proud of my ability to provide services to clients without the use of blowing out or applying heat. I am most known for my Senegalese twists, which I execute without using a braid starts. My clientele base is 98% natural. Of that, about 50% of them prefer to not use heat for their styles. This sets me apart from others. My Glueless units are completely custom made to their head, so my clients do not have to use glue or adhesives sprays.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
In June 2020, I literally quit my career. To be frank, that’s like throwing 4.5 years of college in the trash. I dropped out of my graduate program to pursue this. I’ve never been a huge risk taker in terms of my career and stability. Embracing that side of life was the best thing I could have ever done. I wish I did it a long time ago, but I probably wouldn’t appreciate my craft the way I do now. So if you want to do something, it just do it. Create a plan and execute it.
