Today we’d like to introduce you to Tiesha Robinson.
Tiesha, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My story? Umm… that might take a while, but I’ll do my best to summarize it. Originally, from Lake County Illinois, I grew up with many voids. My parents were heavy into alcohol and drugs. My father ended losing his life to addiction. Under the influences of her past and alcoholism, my mother struggled with providing stability and loving environment. In that, I was subjected to a lot of abuse that I had to cope with. In my darkest times as a kid, I would look myself in the mirror or hold myself crying and say ” you’re going get up from here.” In school, I was teased because I struggle with reading and lack of fashion sense. There was nothing we could do about my clothes because we were broke, but my brother Edward Robinson would write stories for me, so I could become strong in reading and writing despite the fact I’m dyslexic. In that, I developed a love for words and how they come together to create amazing stories that transcend past your current state. How they paint mental picture that can last a lifetime.
For me, I like to say it was love at first recite! When I was about 8, I was watching the TV and these women came on her tone was deep, forward, structured and passionate she said ” in this life, we have to give credit to the Heroes and Sheroes in our lives. Boom! At that moment, looking at Maya Angelou, I said: I am a Shero because she rose I can too. At the age of 16, my Uncle and Aunt brought me to Houston because I was becoming lost in my environment. In my journey, I’ve made many mistakes that I’ve had to rise out of to become better instead of staying stuck. Fast forwarding to 2015, I launched my organization “SheRose formally know as Sheroes Still Exist” which is a Houston-based organization dedicated to helping people rise into who they really are not what they’ve always been.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Smooth road? Not at all. Looking back, I believe it would’ve been smoother if I stayed focused on mastering my lane, and not comparing my travels to others. Some of the struggles I endured was self-acceptance, consistency, managing finances, and letting the past remain exactly where it is. Behind me.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about SheRose – what should we know?
SheRose is a Houston based organization that is geared toward helping women rise out of anything that maybe hindering them from becoming who they truly are. We are known for performing arts, outreach and group studies. There are two things that I am very proud of. One being, the phenomenal women that are a part of SheRose they are truly gems indeed. Secondly, we took women from the Star of hope and helped the transition back into the job market. With employers onsite, professional makeovers, resume help and interview tips! 8 out of the 10 women got employed! That warms my heart every time I think about.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
For my success, I would say my heart for people, I do my best to think of what is needed and not so much wanted. With saying that, if you take the time and really think about life. You will realize that you can go far with the essentials if you’re grateful and creative. Also, charisma, laughter, sense of humor, and the ability to listen.
