Meet Tisha Butler of The Way Family Dojo Martial Arts & Leadership Academy in Magnolia

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tisha Butler.

Tisha, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am a Black Belt mom. That is, I am a mother of four Black Belts, and I am a Black Belt myself. When my children were young, I enrolled them in Taekwondo. It wasn’t long until I took a Women’s Self-Defense class at their Martial Arts school. During that class, I realized how important it was that I learn how to protect myself and my kids. I joined Krav Maga… and then Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu…. and then Taekwondo…. and then Bahalana… and then Boxing. My family fell in love with Martial Arts. My kids were active in competing in Taekwondo. They all received medals at AAU Nationals at one time or another. One of my daughters, Becka Butler, made the USA National Taekwondo Team at age 13 and has traveled the world competing in Taekwondo. She is a Senior World Ranked Taekwondo fighter and our Head Coach. Another one of my daughters, Keely Butler, was painfully shy growing up, but loved Martial Arts and loved being a part of the Demo Team. She has a gift with young children and Special Needs Athletes. She heads up our Little Ninjas (2-4 years old) and Special Needs Athletes Program.

Over the years, as we trained and grew in Martial Arts, we often dreamed of having our own school one day. This May that dream became a reality when we opened The Way Family Dojo Martial Arts & Leadership Academy. Our 6,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility in Magnolia offers world class training while being comfortable for students and their families. It is our mission to create a community that families will love being a part of that will add value to their lives through our programs that are grounded in offering world-class instruction while focusing on developing the student as a whole person. Along with learning how to break a board, do a back kick, sparring strategies and more the student will learn what it means to be courteous, live with integrity and persevere in life. We are a Black Belt Leadership school that gives students the skills they need to succeed in life by integrating Life Skills Training into every Martial Arts class. Our students improve Focus, Discipline, Respect and Confidence all while having fun!

The Way Family Dojo offers exciting, enjoyable, energy-packed training no matter your experience level or age.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I always tell my students, “anything worth having in life is worth working for and sacrificing for.” Opening your own business is hard and scary, but so worth it. For me, the amazing community we have at The Way Family Dojo is worth all the hard work and sacrifice. It is my vision to not just be another place that offers Martial Arts, but to be a community, to poor back into the community, a family that works together to help these children grow into the Leaders that will shape our world tomorrow.

Please tell us about The Way Family Dojo Martial Arts & Leadership Academy.
We are a Martial Arts & Leadership Academy. We offer Taekwondo, Krav Maga, Kadima Women’s Self Defense & Cage Fitness. I believe what sets us apart is our community and our curriculum. We work together with parents to mentor their children into amazing Black Belt Leaders both on the mats and off. We do this through our curriculum. Every two months we work on a new Life Skill: Focus, Discipline, Respect, Confidence, Honesty and Communication. In addition, every week students are working for different stripes on their belt. These are given out when a student shows the character traits, such as following directions or positive attitude, both on the mats and off.

Another area that we are proud of is how The Way Family Dojo gives back to the community. We offer Free Kadima Women’s Self Defense classes every Saturday at 11. We also encourage community service and provide opportunities for our students to give back.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
This is a hard question because I believe you never lose – you either win or learn. I have definitely made mistakes along the way, some painful, but I wouldn’t trade the knowledge I gained from making those mistakes.
