Today we’d like to introduce you to Tobias Bass.
So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
As a kid, I’ve always wanted to be a sports journalist. My mom would make me write articles and she would critique them. For a while, she told me to start my own website. Being young, I never listened to her until 2016 the Summer before I transferred from Texas Tech University. That summer, I worked really hard on my brand and my craft. Coming to Tech I was a junior as I came from Blinn Junior College with my AA. I worked for several newspapers and did some freelance work at Tech until the summer of my senior year. For a while, I wanted to get into podcasting and sports radio. I tried doing it on my phone but as you would assume, it didn’t sound great. I kept seeing this Tech student on Twitter named “RC” who loves sports just like I did. So I decided to DM him not knowing much about him, come to find out he was the podcast director at the Texas Tech radio station KTXT 88.1 The Raider. We did a few shows together and built a nice rapport. Eventually, he asked me did I want to work for the station as a sports reporter. A year later, my website has taken off with over 12k in views. I do sports radio and podcast four times a week and cover all the teams on campus.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My biggest roadblocks have been legitimacy. People see a college kid and think why should I listen to you. Also support from people close to you. Sometimes people only support you just incase you make it. Many people see and hear your goals but think they are to hard and aren’t attainable. So they will give up on you or not support the way you think. Finally, the biggest roadblock would have to be is exposure. There are millions of podcast and sports blogs. I had to find a way to separate my own and make it unique.
The Opinionated Sixth Man – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am a sports journalist with my own sports website and podcast. I specialize in sports talk, analysis and writing. What makes my work different from others is I give it to you straight. I call it how I see it. No matter if I like the player or team. I am most proud of the work I’ve put in and how my brand has grown in the past three years. Working for KTXT has done a lot for me as a man and as journalist. In one year at the station, I got to cover the Final Four, Women’s college soccer NCAA tournament, college baseball Super Regional. Not to mention several connections all of the U.S.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Covering the Final Four. I was very honored and blessed to do that. Many people will go their whole careers and not be able to do that. Not to mention my school was in the National Championship for the first time in school history.
