Today we’d like to introduce you to Tommy & Kathy Ferguson.
Tommy & Kathy, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
After 42 years as Directors of Camp Olympia, Kathy and I retired. Although retired, we were not ready just to sit in a rocking chair. I had always restored antiques and loved working with wood. My daughter attended a Board and Brush class in Cedar Park and called me and said this is something you and mom would like to do. We investigated and found out they were in the early stages of franchising. The franchise originated in Hartland, Wisconsin. We filled out the questionnaire and were invited to meet with the owners and flew to Wisconsin to see if there was a match. We loved working and meeting new people, and this was the perfect opportunity to continue to be active and help our customers create a unique custom sign in a fun atmosphere. After much thought and prayer, we decided to proceed.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Starting a business from scratch is always challenging. We have lived at camp for over 42 years in Trinity, Texas. Huntsville looked like a perfect place. Huntsville is a growing community and the access to the surrounding areas were ideal for us. Social media is our main source of getting the word out online. I am learning everyday about how to effectively use this to bring people into the studio. Our goal is to provide a quality experience to everyone who walks in our door. We love getting to know our customers. We have a soft spot for kids, so our kid birthday parties are some of our favorite events. Kathy is a talker and she relates well with everyone. She does the booking and the preparation, and I conduct the class with instruction and as much hands on with each customer as possible. We have been blessed with great staff from Sam Houston State University. We were award by the Huntsville Item “Best New Business” this year in Huntsville.
Board and Brush Creative Studio Huntsville Texas – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
At Board & Brush in Huntsville, we marry the joy of wine and paint with the classic timelessness of wooden signs. Our instructor led DIY wood sign workshops allow you to combine your creativity and willingness to learn new skills. We provide you with the instruction, materials and design for you to distress, sand, stain, paint, and customize your personalized piece of art!
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Kathy and I enjoy going to the studio every day. In the studio, we want our customers to feel at home. We strive to always make the customer experience fun, fulfilling, and leave with a project they are proud to display in their home or give as a special gift. Customers appreciate the time you spend with them. Encouraging remarks on Facebook from their experience are very rewarding. We provide a family atmosphere and treat everyone as someone we have known a lifetime.
