Today we’d like to introduce you to Crystal Lewis.
Crystal, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Growing up as a teenager, I always desired to model. And to inspire the youth, I have always been into fashion and magazines. Modeling didn’t come easy for me at all it took years for my dreams to come true. Good things come to those who wait! So, here I am, ten years later fulfilling modeling. Of course, I gained weight over the years prior to modeling. So, one day, I was strolling on Instagram and I came across plus size model Ashley Graham and I was so inspired by her, so I took a look in the mirror and told myself what are you waiting for? It’s not too late! Go for it. So, I did my research and I started networking with local boutiques and started getting free gigs and I also starting shopping and modeling local brands and even high-end brands on my Instagram with cute pictures. I even invested in some camera equipment for good quality. People started noticing me and seeing my drive. Long story short, I decided to reach out to a modeling agency in Houston called page parks and I did everything they told me to do to meet their agency requirements and they loved me. I am proud to say that I am a signed model now! So, hard work really pays off. Don’t give up on your dreams!
Has it been a smooth road?
It can be a smooth road based on your attitude and drive. Me personally I had no problems pursuing plus size modeling I just got my face and name out there. And continued networking with people and even submitting myself to agencies. This industry is for people with tough skin you can’t let people tear you down. Just start with baby steps, I suggest posting your pics online continuously and everything else will fall in place!
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I am a plus-size model. I am a body activist for self-love and being body shame-free. I believe beauty is in the eye of the beholder and body have no size on it.
Do you feel like there was something about the experiences you had growing up that played an outsized role in setting you up for success later in life?
I would say my mother had a lot to do with building my confidence to do anything I set my mind to do. She prepared me in many ways for this journey. So, I thank her very much.
