Meet Trailblazer Joauna Tuck

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joauna Tuck.

Joauna, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started gaining my work ethics at the tender age of 13 working as a cashier at Randall’s Grocery Store. I have always had a mindset to be successful despite my career choice. I always wanted to strive to do my very best in all areas of my life.

I started working at an entry level position at a large corporation while pursuing my bachelor’s degree. I remained with the corporation for seven years and was able to work my way up to a management position. I was able to gain a strong foundation in the position, however I wanted to push myself to higher heights. I applied to a larger corporation for a specific position; unknowingly selling my skills for a higher position that the corporation saw fit.

This is when I determined I had to do more if I truly wanted to leave a legacy for my children. While contemplating how to leave a legacy, I was laid off of my job which pushed me into taking a leap of faith. All this did was add fuel to my fire and I determined no company would have control over my finances anymore. If I didn’t make money, it would be because of me not the company. And that is where my story of entrepreneurship truly started.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No, the road has not been completely smooth and still has bumps along the way. I faced the fear of being self-employed and struggled with self-doubt, as we can be our own biggest critics. I always asked myself “what if this doesn’t work?” , but my desire to leave a legacy is greater than my doubt. I have many other business ventures I am working on to create multiple streams of income.

My advice for women just starting is to just do it! If you fail the first, second or third time try again! Don’t stop! It can be done! Affirm the things you want out loud and on paper. Get an accountability partner even if you need to hire a coach. You will have to get uncomfortable to reach the desires of your heart. Comfort does not make successful people.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.

Five words you can count on from me is love, integrity, commitment, passion, and fun.

We’re interested to hear your thoughts on female leadership – in particular, what do you feel are the biggest barriers or obstacles?
I believe, in general, the biggest barrier today for women growing is not all women reach back and help other women. There is a lot of cattiness and women waiting for the next to fall or just wanting to flaunt what they have. I think that women struggle with feeling like they need to be better than the next woman when, in reality, we can help each other alleviate barriers and achieve success together. I know I am not completely as successful as I want to be, but I try and assist women as much as possible along the way. I love to help women along their journey to success by giving advice on what I know or to simply be a tool for encouragement.  To help them not make the same mistakes I did, or to just encourage them to start working on making that dream a reality.
