Today we’d like to introduce you to Kierra Reyna.
So, before we jump into specific questions about what you do, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Let me give you the grand tour! My journey with modeling started off a few years ago. It started off as something as simple as, me getting dressed for the day and finding places in Houston to explore with my cousin. We’d snap some photos with cute backdrops to post on Instagram. My first photoshoot would be with wardrobe stylist Leanna Long and her brand “KaeL.” Modeling wasn’t something I envisioned myself doing. I was certain my first photoshoot would be my last because it wasn’t “me.” This was at a time I was unsure of what I wanted to do. I was still struggling with transitioning from being in the military to being a civilian. I was battling with depression. I didn’t know who I was and what I wanted to do.
My first time working with Leanna is what jump-started me taking modeling serious. As I continued working with Leanna, I began to become more confident as a model. To me, self-expression is a PRIORITY. Through fashion, I can embody whoever or whatever look I want. Leanna Long, the Teyana Taylor’s, Sza’s, Iamddb’s, and Aaliyah’s out in the world are my main inspirations. Leanna allowed me to volunteer to be apart of her brand. She embraced me and allowed me to be myself. Leanna is a major influencer to look out for. She’s a fashion stylist, a photographer, a makeup artist. She does it all. I really look up to her. The artists I named inspired me because like myself they embrace the masculinity/femininity that we all possess. I was that “tomboy” growing up. Through my fashion, I want to embody that masculinity and femininity that I mentioned, with my own flair, of course.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Nothing is ever easy. Everything has its challenges. My challenge was mainly with my mental health. That was my priority. Making sure that I took the necessary steps to not sulk. I took the time to deal with my traumas so that’ll I can move forward with my future. Talking about my problems, journaling, and finding hobbies that made me feel good helped me.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of. I pride myself on my creativity and open-mindedness, which set me aside from others. I’m very fluent and versatile in my craft, I’m never afraid to be bold, daring, and adventurous. I’ll try anything once. I refuse to limit myself. Modeling is what I’m known for at the moment. I’m also a photographer. I felt as though it was important to not only be in front of the lens but also behind it. I’m learning how to sew, that way I can make my own clothing. At the moment, my brand is in the works, I’m a trick of all trades, I want 100% creativity in all my ventures. I am a creator and an artist. There are many avenues I intend on exploring.
What’s the most important piece of advice you could give to a young woman just starting her career?
To anyone just starting out their journey, we’re all afraid of something at some point. Our comfort zone feels good, but the thrill of finding out what we’re capable feels even better. Put yourself out there. Be unapologetically and authentically you. That’s what’s important. Don’t be afraid to break free from what no longer serves you. WE are powerful.
