Today we’d like to introduce you to Liv Harrison.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
At 7 years old I made my radio debut by helping advertise about my father’s tire store. The first talk I ever wrote and public ally gave was at 13. The first retreat I wrote and produced was with friends at age 18. My first emceeing gig was at age 21. And the first conference I helped write, design, and execute was at 35.
It was not until I was 40 years old that I launched as a professional. It was when I had found myself on national radio by accident that my life took a drastic turn.
In August of 2017 I was at a women’s conference, EDEL, in Austin, TX. A few weeks before the conference all ticket buyers were asked if they wanted to be a part of a show that would take place on the first day of the conference. I assumed this was a mom with a podcast and she would be in her room with an iPhone taking willing participants to broaden her content and audience. When I was chosen to be on this “mom podcast” I was apathetic. I never listened to podcasts so I didn’t have strong feelings either way.
It was when I was walking to the door of the room where the recording was taking place when my friend grabbed my arm and said, “My mom can’t wait to hear you today”. “On a podcast? Wait do those air live?” I asked her in return. She turned to me and said, “Liv you are about to be on national radio. This is a Sirius XM show that you are going live on”. It was then than I called and told my mother to hop in her car to listen. I had no idea.
I had seconds to process the gravity of the situation, I opened the door to an audience of over 100 women and a stage with 2 national radio personalities that I wasn’t familiar with. When I got to the stage one of the women already decked out in headphones and a big mic in front of her said, “put in those headphones we go live in 30 seconds”. I had no prep, no clue, and no time to form anxiety because this moment was happening.
13 minutes of live national radio was filled with humor and stories and afterwards compliments I wasn’t prepared to accept. The next morning I had an email from a Sirius XM producer asking me to return to the show. I soon had a need to have a website and a way to connect with people and to book speaking/emceeing gigs. I launched thelivharrison.com and as they say in the business, the rest is history.
Has it been a smooth road?
The hardest adjustment from going from non-public to a more public life is the in-between times. It is really easy to fall into self-doubt and settle into low self-worth because you never know when the last job is the last one ever. The instability of the work I do is absolutely challenging. And the highs and lows are very extreme which also makes for an exciting life.
Another struggle is to get out of your own way to allow amazing opportunities to be received. What makes this an interesting challenge.is that you can become your own worst enemy. Sometimes just stepping aside in your head can be the most freeing experience.
So my advice is to keep a list of the hard truths you know about yourself and your work. You need to remind yourself during those times of self-doubt and dryness. That’s when we tend to believe the negative tapes that we give so much power to. And the truth is they are just that, they are nothing but tapes. So relying on actual truth can get you through a lot of dark and unsure times.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
There is an incredible self-learning tool called Strength Finders. From this program your top 5 strengths are determined by a series of questions. My top 5 are: Positivity, WOO (winning others over), Communication, Restorative, Developer. I believe it’s the combination of 5 strengths that makes me unique and allows me to do the work I do. What I pride myself on is how people feel after they leave a talk I gave or after an event I emceed or after attending the women’s conference I created.
I have a very simple agenda. I am truly interested in every person, but especially women to discover their purpose with true intention. What that means is I believe you have to live life with intention. And once you begin that you find out what your purpose truly is.
This concept led to the creation of a women’s conference that had not existed. The conference is called Genius. It is a weekend conference away where women can just show up as women. Even though it is fully titled Genius Catholic Women’s Conference isn’t exclusive to Catholics or moms, or young adults, or singles, or married. The conference is written with great intention for all women.
The energy created throughout the weekend is something to be experienced. The first time the Genius Catholic Women’s Conference took place no one was prepared for the abundant blessings. There was a unity developed over the weekend between traditional Catholic teachings and the beauty of the modern woman. Women of all ages and sizes and stations of life were able to laugh, cry, pray, rejoice, praise & worship, dance, and unite together. The best way to describe the Genius experience is that it has the atmosphere of a retreat but with the content of a conference.
The 2020 Genius Catholic Women’s Conference will take place March 6-8 at the Marriott Las Colinas in Dallas.

We’re interested to hear your thoughts on female leadership – in particular, what do you feel are the biggest barriers or obstacles?
The best piece of advice I can give regarding not only your career but in all things is to take the risk when you feel the pull. Stepping out into that risk can be absolutely life changing. But you have to pay attention to what you’re saying yes to and why! If there isn’t a moral, ethical, or personal reason to avoid the risk then I say you need to say YES! And the more you lean into this concept and practice the easier it becomes to recognize the risks worth taken. It is absolutely a skill you can develop through intentional practice.
Oh and don’t forget to laugh… a lot!
