Meet Trailblazer Mariana Cano

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mariana Cano.

Mariana, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was born and raised in Mexico City. I’m a mom of three kids who never imagined seeing them grow up in the U.S. I started blogging simply to share my experiences during this fun adventure of raising my family in a different country and with the great hope to see my children grow into happy, healthy, but above all, truly bicultural adults.

I’ve lived in the great city of Houston for 13 years; we both have grown and evolved together. It’s amazing how a city develops, diversifies and increasingly offers you all kinds of restaurants, cultural and sporting events and activities for all ages, tastes, and nationalities.

Houston received me with open arms in 2004 and saw my debut as a mom. Since that day, it’s given me an endless number of unimaginable experiences. An excellent hospital where my three children were born, a place to take my babies to an early learning and development class (since their grandmas weren’t around), a park on every corner and multiple restaurants where I can enjoy a good conversation with friends or a romantic dinner with my husband, a beach 50-minutes away, a lake for skiing, and incredible museums and exhibits, as well as jogging trails, tennis clubs – one of my greatest passions, and grocery stores with all the necessary ingredients to make my grandmother’s delicious dishes so that I won’t miss them.

Houston has been my home away from home. And, it’s allowed me to pursue one of my greatest passions — photography.

Although I continue to miss my family, this city holds and protects me, making this adventure an incredible life experience; an experience that I’m really excited to share with you through my pictures and stories in my bilingual blog called Yo Mariana.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
When I started blogging, one of my very best friends who’s also in a similar business gave me a great advice: If this is your passion and what you love, never stop. And those words had always stayed with me throughout this journey. Whenever I feel discouraged or disappointed, I just think, don’t stop, never give up.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Yo Mariana Blog – what should we know?
Yo Mariana is a Bilingual Lifestyle Blog. Through this platform, I share useful information about where to dine, have fun, and enjoy our great city of Houston. I also share my kids’ stories and also my passion for running. Photography is a huge part of my life, so all my stories are always portrayed by high-quality photography. I think what sets me apart is that you can find my content in Spanish and in English, your choice.

So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well positioned for?
As women, we are living in a very challenging but also exciting moment in history. I think the way people think about equal pay is starting to shift as we see more women in high executive roles in politics and businesses. The #metoo and #timesup movements have proven that we’ve had enough and that it’s time to support each other as women and to realize that we deserve the best and nothing less.
