Meet Trailblazer Tammy Fleming

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tammy Fleming.

Trendz by Tammy Hair Salon is a full-service hair salon in southeast Houston. They specialize in precision short haircuts, marcel curls, hair coloring, hair weaving, dreadlocks, virgin relaxers, hair braiding and much more. Tammy, the owner of the salon, has been a professional hairstylist for 24 years. It has been a long, hard fight for her to get to where she is today.

Tammy grew up in a foster home after her mother was murdered, her father incarcerated, and all her 6 siblings were separated from her. She won a $10,000 scholarship and was able to attend the college of her choice, Xavier University of Louisiana. Being in state’s custody, she would have only been able to go to a state college. After graduating from college with her degree in accounting, Tammy gave up that career before she even got started. She turned down her first salaried accounting job offer to enter cosmetology school. She says it’s a decision she never regretted.

In 1995, after completing her college degree in accounting and her curriculum at Molers Beauty College, Tammy stepped out of faith again and moved with her 4-year-old son to Houston, TX. She had only $200 in my pocket, no family or friends and no job lined up. She started her life in Houston on welfare. Tammy took temporary assignments in accounting until she built her cosmetology clientele. She hated working in an office setting, but she would work 8 to 10 hours a day just so that she could do hair in the evening and on weekends. It was like accounting was her job and hair was her fun hobby. In just 5 years, she opened her first hair salon, Trendz by Tammy Hair Salon in March 2000. She was seven months pregnant.

Tammy was now the single mother of two young boys and she had no family in Houston. She had to find a way to make things work. She had to figure out how she could work the long hours required to be successful in cosmetology and take care of her young boys. Tammy devised a plan. She first moved from her rented townhouse into the back of her rented salon. She literally cut her debt in half and positioned herself to buy a home. On year after opening her first salon, Tammy purchased her first home in May 2001. She turned a portion of the home into a beautiful storefront business that remained her hair salon and a constant presence in the southeast Houston community for 12 years.

After September 11, 2001, Tammy wanted to make some changes, in 2002 she became a real estate agent and then a real estate broker in 2005. She could not afford expensive advertising, so she taught myself search engine optimization (SEO), so that I could market her business properly. Now she consistently appears at the top of Google’s organic search results for her keywords. Tammy is also a Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Business Alumni. Tammy is also a motivational speaker and a spoken word poet.
History of Trendz By Tammy Hair Salon.

In 2009, Tammy expanded her salon and added the staff of 2 hairstylists and shampoo assistant. By 2013, Trendz by Tammy had outgrown its location. Tammy relocated the salon to a place twice as big as her previous location. But in just one year, Tammy realized she had also outgrown that location as well. She set her sights on a second location. Tammy is so happy to be opening her second location of Trendz by Tammy Hair Salon near downtown/3rd ward in August 2018. Tammy attributes a large part of the success of the salon to her love of the industry, her personal training staff, her education and her determination to succeed. Tammy sees great potential for the growth of Trendz by Tammy Hair Salon because of the frequency in which Houstonian visit the hair salon, the influx of relocations into the city every month, and the presence that Trendz has on the internet and in the community that leads new Houstonian residents right to her. Come to see Tammy and her staff at Trendz by Tammy Hair Salon today, visit her website.

Has it been a smooth road?
No, not at all. Hard work will make the difference. Don’t let your gender stop you from doing whatever it is you want to do.

What’s the most important piece of advice you could give to a young woman just starting her career?
Educate yourself. Thank outside the box in order to win. Do your homework and research and don’t take no for an answer. When you are in the moment use all of your knowledge and skills to your advantage. And most of all don’t quit when things get hard or you feel it’s unfair. Life is not fair and there is no honor in quitting.
