Meet Trailblazer Tiffany Carter

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tiffany Carter.

Tiffany, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
It all started when I was seven, my mom put the mannequin in my hand. From that day, I knew it was my soul purpose to do hair. I enrolled in beauty school while in high school and by the time I graduated from high school, I had my cosmetology license, and that was a start to my passion. I went off to college Sam Houston state, for Fashion merchandise, I stayed for about three years and with five classes left until graduation, I DROPPED OUT… I just couldn’t do it anymore, my heart was not in school, my burning passion was hair and I just decided one day to pack my stuff up and move back home Houston Texas, and start my career!!! I started off assisting a few stylists to get some knowledge under my belt before I stepped out on my own. While assisting, I was traveling back and forth to New York, putting fashion shows together for Big designers for FASHION WEEK in the big Apple… for about three years, that’s all I did, I travel with hair and assisting stylist in Houston, until 2016, I stepped out on faith and got my own salon suite, it was a hard thing to do but I did it and built my clientele, had a few mentors along the way, Damian Walters who pushed me and motivated me to just do it, with no regrets and no fears. He played a huge role in making me the stylist I am today, gave me my first few clients and made me grab the rest for my own and told me to let my work speak for itself!!! I’m now going on my second year of being on my own and business has never been better, I’m getting ready to come out with my own hair care line that will gear towards my clients that are natural and have locs!!!

Has it been a smooth road?
To be honest, nothing God puts his hands on in my life is ever really smooth or easy. I’ve always loved a challenge all my life in school and in my personal life, so when it came to me owning my own salon and building my brand, it had been nothing short of a challenge. In the beginning, it’s all about putting yourself out there and making it known what you do, sometimes I would sit in the shop all day and not get one client, and other days, I would only make enough to pay booth rent, which was a hard struggle considering I’m a single parent. Yes, I make this look easy because I know who’s in full control of my life, but there were times I didn’t have all my supplies because I only made enough to keep overhead, but I made do with what I had and got the job done. Even if I had only two people for that week, I made sure each one of them walked out my salon looking ten times as better as they did when they first walked in, so when people have seen them, they instantly wanted to book with me, and guess what THEY DID!!! I tell any upcoming salon owner or entrepreneur in the making that it’s not easy in the beginning, in fact, I had to stay prayed up but I never gave up because now, I’m at a position that I thought I could never see. Keep going and trust your self and your craft, always seek more education in your field of expertise, we all can still learn new things.

We’d love to hear more about Hair at Tiffani’s.
I’m a hairstylist that specializes in natural hair i.e. (locs, color, and silk presses, weaves). I’m mostly known for my silk presses and colors and locs… that’s what the bulk of my clientele is centered around. I’m most proud of my growth and my faith within my business and my increase in my skills, it has really gotten more creative. What sets me apart from others is: I’m so down to earth, I create a chill environment, no stress when you step in my salon, I take my time but I get my clients out in a timely manner, every loc, silk press and color panel is always worked on with love, no one leaves out of my chair not feeling my love and witnessing it in there style. When you see my clients, you see me and you know it has my name written all over it!

What’s the most important piece of advice you could give to a young woman just starting her career?
The most important piece of advice I can give is to SAVE YOUR MONEY and invest it back into your business especially within the first year to two years… set standards with your self and clients, how you portray and respect your business is how everyone else will too. My grandmother always told me HOW YOU START OUT IS HOW YOU HAVE TO FINISH!!!
