Today we’d like to introduce you to Travis Goode.
Travis, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am very lucky to be able to say I started around 5 years old. Of course, at the time, I had no idea. I just remember my mother having a desk with a computer, a typewriter, a drawer full of envelopes and a massive leather-bound folder and my old man coming home every day covered in sweat, metal shavings, grease and dust. This was Majestik Industries. I saw this every day during my elementary years, but did not know what any of it meant.
I found the meaning a week after my 15th birthday, when I worked my first job for Majestik. It involved, among other things, a jackhammer and hauling wheelbarrows up a ramp with several-hundred pounds of wet concrete in them. It was here when I first realized what it meant to have a “job” and complete a task. This kind of project is completed every day in every country in the industrialized world. I wasn’t just pouring a concrete trench at University of Houston by chance. There were many steps taken that allowed this project to come to fruition and eventually reach completion. And by the time I was halfway through college, I realized I needed to know every single step.
Has it been a smooth road?
It’s always hard for me to complain about “the road”. Compared to a starving family in Ethiopia, the road has been quite smooth. Compared to other “Mom and Pop” operations, there have definitely been struggles. My parents, who founded the company, would have heated disagreements in our at-home office. We’ve had to fire friends and family members. We’ve had former employees attempt to use their knowledge of our business against us. My mother – the only person in the company’s history (over 24 years) to work in the accounting department – was diagnosed with a rare form of skin cancer in 2003. She has since kicked its ass, but those were some of the toughest years of our lives. Combine those bumps in the road with market fluctuations, the recession and periods of economic uncertainty, and you realize the importance of hard work and resiliency.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
We are a General Contractor. We specialize in turnkey projects – metal fabrication, building and installing pipe-handling systems, installing foundations for precision machinery, building erection and land development. We are known for increasing efficiency in the manufacturing of drill pipe. Our pipe-handling systems are customized for the drill pipe manufacturer. It’s not glamorous, but I like to think we play a small role in providing energy to hundreds of millions across the globe.
It’s hard to isolate a single facet of our business of which I am most proud. I guess it would be our commitment to honesty. You see less and less of it these days, so it’s something in which I find increasing value.
We set ourselves apart with an unparalleled commitment to perfection. We measure four times and cut once. It’s probably a tired cliché, but our work is not complete until it is right.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
We are a small cog in the harvest and distribution of energy. We operate in the energy capital of the world. We develop land in one of the fastest-growing cities on the planet. I’d say the Greater Houston Area is ideal for a business like ours. I would recommend all businesses come to Texas. Our economy is stable, our regulations minimal. It is an entrepreneur’s paradise.
