Today we’d like to introduce you to Travis M.
Travis, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Writing songs since the fourth grade, being an entertainer has always been my dream. In high school, I had become good friends with a lead singer of a local band. After knowing Brandt, the lead singer, for a while, he suggested that we make a rap group with fellow classmates which at the time seemed comical.
While the rap group was short-lived, at the age of 15, I was able to see that a career in music as a possibility. As I continued through High School, I began refining my craft, writing, recording, and performing on stages around Houston. During this same time span, my mother and I had been evicted from our home, living in a hotel, ultimately to an apartment from which I took the city bus to a friend to record my first songs; music became instrumental in getting me through difficult times. I continue to make music to help others through their difficult times.
I went to college at Grambling State University where I met Nobel Michael, who later became the co-founder of Soular Sounds. I graduated with a degree in Mass Communication: Broadcasting. I learned my way around a camera, photo, and video editing, all the while making myself known as a Rapper and a Poet, and getting to open up for Young Thug. Growing more confident in all that I have learned to do, I always knew that there was something missing from the equation. I knew I couldn’t do it alone and that I needed a team.
Soular Sounds is the realization of that team. Nobel Michael, heading our graphic design, DJ Koala Khool, audio production, and myself, video production. Nobel and I had been working together for some time, as fraternity brothers and as creatives; He produced beats and graphics, I rapped. One day he brought the idea of creating this network after seeing throw my first open mic event in the city of Houston. A few years later, we met DJ Koala Khool, and the foundation was laid.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The most recent challenge we have faced is finding a steady venue to hold our own events. We do fine featuring and booking artists for other people’s events, but some time in May the venue we had been holding our monthly artist showcases at, had burned down.
The suspected arson left us without a venue to hold our events at so it took some time, but we were able to hook up with The Isles Eatery & Rhum Bar in time for our NYE launch party on Dec 31st. We are looking to continue a relationship with The Isles for more events throughout the year.
Please tell us about Soular Sounds.
Soular Sounds was formed to help provide a network for the driven independent artist to have easier access to things they may not otherwise be able to have access to for various reasons. Nobel Michael and DJ Koala Khool are the other 2/3s that make up the foundation of the company.
The three of us provide Graphic Design, Audio, and Video production to a variety of clientele while teaming up with artists to offer them the same services and more for their brand including, management, and cross promotion.
We are known for providing performance opportunities and live entertainment for events by booking talent from our network of artists. Our network of artists include poets, singers, rappers, guitarists, and a live band. Artists that work with us receive footage, and photos from the events hosted by Soular Sounds.
We also correspond with our artists in the direction of their music and brand and provide promotional material (videos, photos, fliers, logos, etc.) for artists and other small businesses.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memory from childhood was going outside and being active with my friends from the neighborhood. We played football in the street, basketball in driveways, and whatever else we could think of.
