Today we’d like to introduce you to Travis M.
Travis, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have been writing songs since the fourth grade. I always had a fascination with poetry and lyrics. That was something in me that never went away. My sophomore year in high school, a friend of mine had an indie-funk band and he inspired me to pick up, rapping in a serious way which meant recording songs and performing live. This proposal came at a time of hardship for me when my mom and I were evicted from our home that I spent my early teen years in. That same year I performed in my first talent show and recorded my first mixtape.
That was ten years ago. Through my attendance at Grambling State University, I developed my craft as a spoken word artist. I remained determined, kept performing every chance I got, won a few talent shows and opened up for Young Thug.
As a college graduate, I hit the city of Houston with a new rap name, eager to get my name out there as an up and coming artist. Though I pride myself in being an independent artist, I would not be where I am today without the help of the team known as Soular Sounds that has grown around me. The city of Houston has a supportive tightly-knit group of artists on the rise and I am proud to say a number of them are good friends of mine.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The hardest part of the journey were the times I felt alone in this pursuit of my passion. No producers, managers, etc, to work with or guide me down this path. Years of feeling like you don’t have enough resources to be impactful, writing and recording songs in all hours of the night does not always seem like progress. Adversely, over the years I’ve learned that all we need to do is stay the course, and our faith will be rewarded; like-minded individuals will begin to gravitate towards you and you toward them.
Please tell us about your work.
My name is Travis M. I am an Independent Recording Artist/Poet fascinated with the artistic expression of speech, oral or written. As a rapper, I am most proud of my progress over the past ten years, as a songwriter and as a performer. I believe that my passion is rivaled by few and that has led to tremendous growth artistically.
As a songwriter, I have a passion for telling impactful stories-over the years I have learned to make those stories more relatable. I work to deliver a message with every track, be it personally or socially charged. As a performer, I stand out as being very energetic and engaging. I strive to connect personally with my live audiences so we can share our experience together. Ultimately, I have so much fun on stage that it’s contagious.
I most recently dropped an Album “The MisUnderstood” an Epic Tale of how Being Yourself can Save the day. The album is backed with features by prominent Houston Indies and production by Koala Khool. Brought to you by Soular Sounds.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I think it is still too early in my career for regrets. I am just getting started and I would hate to start over.
