Today we’d like to introduce you to Tricia Stroud.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was little girl who constantly begged for a camera. My love of photography goes back to the age of 7. My mother bought me a 110-film camera at the age of 8, right before I went to Disney World on vacation with my uncle’s family. I photographed many random things on that trip at angles I would later learn were studied in photography. My passion for photography stayed with me until I graduated high school. I started working for Sear’s Portrait Studio while I was in college. I was taught to pose individuals and groups while working at Sears. This information was valuable and a critical for my future career as a professional photographer. My early work was all studio work. I worked for large companies like JC Penny’s and PCA (Walmart’s portrait studio). It was during these times that I fell in love with props. It was the best way to show my creative side while using a stationary camera that didn’t have the ability to capture different angles. Life will always take us through many different paths and I found myself in the corporate world working for Verizon Wireless where I achieved many goals within the company, but my time was stolen in the process of those achievements. My inner creative side was still dying to escape so I picked my camera and dusted it off. Let’s be honest times had changed in the photography world. Film was a thing of the past so to say and this new digital world was scary and intriguing. It didn’t take long for the passion to return.
I continued to freelance while still working full time, but after around 18 months I decided to walk away from my job and pursue photography full time. Over the years I have shot for corporate events, high school proms, weddings, maternity, newborn, family sessions and so many other events. My first love is senior photography and throughout the years I have narrowed my craft down to senior photography for high school and college students. I do currently shoot one corporate event for a long-term client. In the event I am wanting to extend my creativity I will throw in a special where anything goes. If you see those specials get in while you can because they aren’t always available. I love everything about this industry and I can’t wait to extend my services beyond my clients and start to work with aspiring photographers. Today I currently book clients from Atlanta to Colorado and all in between.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The journey has had its peaks and valleys. A peak for me was being nominated and winning the Business Owner of the Year Award at the Blossoming Minds First Annual Gala honoring Dr. M.L. King Jr. in Orange, Texas. The award was voted on by the community. The financial investment was trying in the beginning and even the technical side with editing software was a bit trying. The part of the journey that has been almost entirely smooth is the photography side. Picking up my camera and simply shooting is heaven for me.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Tricia Stroud Photography – what should we know?
My company is a photography business and I also create custom invitations. I specialize in Senior Photography. I like to think I am known for my attention to detail. I also think my clients would say they have no idea what I am thinking when I bring them to a location and then they see the final image and they are shocked. My photography eye is something that my clients always mention to me. I am most proud of the trust that people have and that I get to share in monumental moments in their lives. I love knowing that my art is hanging in the homes of so many people. I am also grateful that this business has allowed me to give back to my clients in the form of scholarships. They vary from year to year but I am able to sow a seed. I set myself apart from others simply by being who I am. I am unique in personality and I try really hard to create an atmosphere that is comfortable. If you have been a client of mine you are most likely now a friend.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I have a strong work ethic and a love for people. My work ethic is so important to my success because there is only one of me. I am my business so if I am not working then nothing is getting accomplished. I enjoy meeting the future of the world in my seniors. I love talking to them during sessions and encouraging them. I also enjoy giving them real world advice.
