Today we’d like to introduce you to Vaughn Chung.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Vaughn. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Paper Gliders was officially established in 2017 that began with a partnership between myself (Vaughn Chung) and my best friend and lead guitarist (Jerick Alegarbes). We both shared many similar musical tastes and wrote a lot of music with each other since the early 2010s, but never had consistent and/or equally passionate members throughout the years. Our lineup was a journey from the start to finish, which began with recording demos and introducing it to some of our favorite musicians and leads to the current lineup that you see today. Ultimately we wanted to bring some of the old traits we missed in music, such as multi-line vocal harmonies alongside with an orchestral and progressive approach to indie rock. We’ve all been inspired by so many different forms of music throughout our lives and the ultimate goal was to bring something people haven’t seen in awhile, but with our own stamp to it.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It wasn’t a smooth road from the start. Before our finalized lineup, Jerick (guitarist/backing vocals) and myself had tragically lost a dear friend of ours in 2016. At this point in time, we weren’t even sure if we wanted to make music anymore. Somehow we managed to pick the pieces up and became ten times more inspired to start from scratch and simply see what happens, We luckily found equally passionate people throughout 2017 leading into 2018, and I believe we all believe in the music. We play for each other and we hope our audience feels our hardwork and comradery every time we step on stage.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I compose a lot of rough drafts of our songs, write lyrics, sing, and play guitar in the group. I think what sets us apart from most groups is the utilization of 3 lead singers while actively being harmoniously present to craft a seamless experience. It’s ultimately a team effort and we pass the baton to make this all work.
What were you like growing up?
I grew up in Alief, TX and was mostly exposed to Houston hip-hop and played a ton of videogames. My life completely changed when a good friend of mine handed me a burned copy of ‘American Idiot’. Due to this, my main interest was playing the guitar, which leads to hundreds of really bad songs, but they were among my favorite memories. There wasn’t really much else I cared for apart from that.
