Meet Vivian Tu of Cakes By Vivian

Today we’d like to introduce you to Vivian Tu.

Vivian, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I have always loved food, most specifically sweets. 8 years ago I started a food/baking blog where I would post recipes and reviews. As I continued with the blog the posts became more centered on desserts. My love for sweets slowly progressed from just eating sweets to making them. I remember whenever I perfected a new recipe I would give out what I made to family and friends. The looks on their faces as they tried what I made would make my day.

Fast forward a few years after, I decided to take on making my son’s birthday cake. This snowballed into cakes for friends and inquiries from their friends. I have always wanted to have a business of my own, I just didn’t know what exactly back then. As the requests came in I thought to myself, “what if I turned this into a business?”. November 13th, 2016 Cakes by Vivian was launched.

Since the launch, I have done the Houstonia Summer Pop Up Show and even had a booth at the Texas Home & Garden Show. I started mainly doing special occasion cakes and cupcakes. After celebrating my first year, I made another big jump and ventured into wedding cakes. I am so proud of how far along I’ve come with this industry and I look forward to seeing where my new adventures with cakes will take me.

Has it been a smooth road?
Like any business, the road to get where I am now was not been easy but it has definitely been a worthwhile experience. I knew that I loved to bake, the challenge for me how do I make this business grow while balancing my life as wife to my supportive husband and mom to two amazing kids. I have learned so much since starting the business and have met some great bakers that have helped me along the way with helpful tips and advice.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Cakes By Vivian story. Tell us more about the business.
Cakes by Vivian does cakes and desserts for special occasions and weddings. I think what sets us apart from others is the creativity in my cakes. Clients want the best for their event and I believe that my passion shows through with the flavors and design of the cakes I curate.

I am most proud of going from doing this just as a hobby, doing it as a business that I truly enjoy is such a fulfilling part of it all. I am truly humbled to have the support that I do from my friends, family, and social media. Speaking of social media, that is definitely something I am still getting used to. It has a HUGE impact on how I interact with clients.

I definitely see it as a blessing to have social media because it opens a whole level of audiences that I wouldn’t be able to reach without the help of it. I try my best to maintain a pleasing aesthetic on my page because it creates attention to people who view my page.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Cake styles have changed so much over the years. Keeping up with the latest trends is part of the fun of being a baker, there is always something new to learn. The only limit in this field is your imagination. There are cakes that can be hung upside down now, who knows what we will see in another 5 years. I am excited to see what comes next.
