Today we’d like to introduce you to Wendy Johnson.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Mount Royal started in 1994. I use to own a deer farm in East Texas. Once we had about 400 head of deer, I was curious who was eating the meat. A friend of mine who became my business partner and I did a little market research to see what restaurants were selling Venison and who was providing it. During our research we found that Venison was certainly becoming more popular and the distributor was located in Dallas that was servicing the Houston area. This is when Mount Royal USA was started. We initially sold only Venison but that was short lived as we expanded out to other game meats. We added new lines based on customer requests
Mount Royal USA Inc. currently sells all game meats including but not limited to Venison, Buffalo, wild boar, kangaroo, Alligator, Quail, all game birds, Wagyu beef and a variety of game sausages.
We supply restaurants, retail stores and other distributors.
Linda Larvin my business partner retired last year.
Has it been a smooth road?
Anytime you start your own business there is always a learning curve. We were fortunate enough to have Rich Flocchini from Sierra Meat company take us under his wing and teach us all about game meats.
Of course, growing a business is always stressful. We went several years without and income to grow the business.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
We sell game meats to area restaurants, meat markets and retail stores. We truly stay focused on just game meats as we do not want to compete in the beef and chicken industry. We wanted to be know as a specialty company.
Most proud that we have survived all the ups and downs of owning a business and are still hear after 23 years. We have some original customers that are still purchasing from us/The Rainbow Lodge.
We are also a woman owned business.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Absolutely, Houston has been a great city to grow a business. There are so many amazing restaurants in and around Houston.
