Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandi Washington.
Brandi, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
As a little girl, I always knew I wanted to run my own business but I had no idea what that would be. I honestly didn’t have any influential people around me who were entrepreneurs so I didn’t get the inspiration from someone else. I feel like I always just had it in me. My mom says I would sell the school candy bars so fast and I would continuously be looking for ways to make money. After high school, the vision that I had to be a Nurse didn’t really go as planned. Hence it was my plan not God’s plan! I had my biggest blessing at 19 years old and she changed my life and path I thought I was going down. After a long journey- I ended up finishing my Bachelor’s degree in Communications from the University of Houston – Downtown and eventually my MBA from Texas Woman’s University. My professional background is in Recruiting/ Human Resources and I have been working in Corporate America since 2014.
At the age of 25, I obtained adult acne (what the heck is that?). It was such a difficult time of my life because every single over-the-counter product I tried – did not work! I was insecure, hated my skin, had dark spots all over while continuously having breakouts, I just felt so ugly. I made a promise to myself that before I turned 30 my skin would be clear and I would walk into my 30’s with confidence. I visited a couple of different dermatologists when finally being prescribed Accutane. I was on that for 6 months while also visiting my very first Esthetician. This is when my burning desire to educate other women on the importance of skincare started! I began sharing information on social media passively and reading and watching all kinds of videos on skincare products. It became a passion for me but I never really thought I would make it into a living. During COVID, I was let go from my corporate job of 3 years and it was then that I decided to go to school to get my license. I didn’t really know how I was going to do it full time and not work at all but here we are! I finished 750 hours, graduated, passed my state exams, and I’m a fully Licensed Esthetician in the State of Texas. I am still working in Corporate and wearing my HR hat but I have also opened my fully operational Spa – Skin pHirst located here in the Houston area.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Nothing worth having comes easy! The road hasn’t been smooth by any means but it has been rewarding in so many ways. Perseverance alone and the ability to take a risk, knowing that I can always get back up after failing is what has kept me pushing over the years. One of the biggest struggles along the way was trying not to compare my success to others. Understanding that my story is unique to my purpose. If we stay focused on writing our story and not trying to take pages from others – we reach our goals much faster with less challenges.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a Licensed Esthetician and although still very early in my career, this is truly my passion. I have not identified a specialization but I have a big heart for clients who struggle with acne and hyperpigmentation. It is my goal to educate women and men to take care of their skin but most importantly their overall health and wellness. I treat all skin types by delivering a plethora of facial and skin treatments. I believe what sets me apart from others is my energy and authenticity.
Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Playing basketball with everyone in the neighborhood and having a chance to be on a movie set with Sandra Bullock.
