Today we’d like to introduce you to Brenda Lugo.
Hi Brenda, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was born creative and extra, I’m a Leo! As far back as I can remember I have had a passion for color and art. Even as a child, I drew, painted, and sketched. My childhood was dark and that’s a testimony of its own. Through it all, I chose to see life in color. The more colors and patterns, the better! Fast forward to my first job ever as a teen, I was a party hostess. I quickly developed a passion for decorating the party room with balloons and other details. I sprinkled confetti everywhere! I loved working with kids, and anyone who knew me knew that. Over the years, that led me to work at a private party venue for kids where I managed the facility and all aspects of booking, touring, managing vendors, and employees. It was there that my love for balloons and event decor really flourished into a dream of my own. I wanted to be an owner.
In 2011, love leads me to Houston, I brought with me all my experience and my dream but was so intimidated by a large new city. I started doing events for, family, friends, and co-workers who knew of my hidden talents in my free time. I halted my pursuit of a business to start a family. In 2019, while planning my daughter’s birthday. party and hers simultaneously, my dear friend Fresvinda Velasquez pushed me to take a leap of faith and go for it, finally! We partnered up, both new moms who believed we could do it and so Events Delivered by Bee was born.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Lord, no! My whole life has been about overcoming adversity and why would starting a business be any different. At first, we struggled with no one taking us seriously. Fresvinda and I still had full-time administrative jobs and toddlers at home. I’m sure from the outside looking in it looked like we bit off more than we could chew. However, we had faith lots and lots of faith. And then came the real test. Fresvinda was diagnosed with breast cancer in August 2019, five months into launching EDxB. How dare I think about celebrating anything when my partner was hit with life-changing news. So then steps in God with his everlasting love for us, we prayed and decided to continue despite the situation. I would be taking over all aspects of the business while Fresvinda rested. Through her battle she was optimistic. She is one of the strongest women I know! No matter how overwhelming it felt for me, she was going through so much more. I can’t take all the credit because my husband stepped in to save me. As if it couldn’t get any worse, the covid pandemic halted the world. But through it all, God gave us the strength to keep going. I switched to no-contact deliveries after a quarantine hiatus. To this day we continue with the same delivery method. And I am so happy to announce that Fresvinda celebrated being cancer-free in February 2021.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
At EDxB we specialize in decor for events of all types. You want to celebrate it; we will decorate it. Balloon decor is our most popular product. We pride ourselves on our quality of work and design. We want the customer to love their install as much as we loved making it. Our motto is “Deliver more than expected” and we want to guarantee satisfaction. I’ve been lucky enough to have clients put their trust in me and give me creative freedom to customize colors and designs. I have yet to disappoint and I don’t intend to. I love using different mediums with balloons and be different. One of my favorites is to paint on them and use materials like lace, glitter, felt, vinyl, bling, florals, balloon twisting, and create something unique. There is a hunger to be innovative and not be scared to go for it. “He who works with his hands, and his head, and his heart, is an artist.”
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I don’t believe in luck. I believe in God and his plans for my future and Events Delivered by Bee. He grants us the desires of our hearts. He has never failed me!
