Today we’d like to introduce you to Dominic Reed.
Hi Dominic, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I picked up the game at 12 years old. My middle school started a golf team and by the time tryouts came around I was fully hooked. I haven’t stopped since. I competed on my HS varsity team for 4 years – ultimately leading to a spot on a small D3 college roster (University of La Verne – Los Angeles, CA). At the conclusion of my first semester, I was offered a spot on Cal State Fullerton’s Golf Team. After spending 3 semesters on the team I returned to Houston, I lost my scholarship due to injury. This began my journey into teaching and coaching. I took my first position with the Axis Golf Academy assisting with their junior program while also developing my knowledge as a coach. Unfortunately, as a Harvey Victim, this position became too much to handle while also pursuing my degree. I made the decision to pursue my degree and put golf down for the only time in my life. This lasted the whole year we spent working on rebuilding our family home. After getting past the rebuild my itch for the game came back. I accepted a job as an assistant golf professional at Westwood Golf Club in SW Houston. This is where I developed my teaching prowess. After 2 years of developing my skills, I accepted a position at an indoor facility in River Oaks. It took me 7 months to realize that I could break into this industry on my own. So I did. This is where Marathon Golf Academy was born. Originally; I ran my business out of Gus Wortham Park GC. I was quick to find success. My name has been growing in the city as the “golf guy”. With over 700 private lessons given in my first year. Now based out of Wildcat Golf Club on the Southside of the city, my goal is to help influence the entire golf community for the better.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road to success is often bumpy. Finding solid ground takes time. It also takes many hours spent honing your craft. My golf story has taken me down so many paths. It’s taught me the strength in perseverance. It also taught me how to roll with the tough times. How to work even harder when it’s slow. How to make the most out of the worst situations.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in golf performance. Specifically in the biomechanics side of golf. My goal is to help all players develop their game regardless of their limitations.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
My drive to always work harder. To ask the right questions to develop my skills. Mostly, my ability to listen to those who have done it before.
