Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyle Garrett.
Hi Kyle, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My journey in music started as early as 2005, playing drums with friends in our middle school cover band at house parties. Which lead to songwriting in early high school, playing in many different styles of bands and even some national touring with my alternative rock group, HIGHDIVE. Like many others in the business, COVID put a strain on what I had been doing so I was forced to switch it up to stay afloat. In early 2020, I was practically bedridden for three months following an invasive surgery, which gave me an unlimited amount of to play guitar and write music and the songs of my new solo project, Kyle Garrett, are the product of that. In November 2021, I crowd-funded over $12,000 to record my first album and have since released a three-song EP to all streaming platforms that includes my single “Spotlight” that was my first Texas Country radio release. The album will release to Spotify, Apple Music, or wherever you listen to this fall!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’m the type of person that gets “bored”, for lack of a better word, easily. I’m always on my toes trying to learn and experience new things. I’ve worked in every facet of the music business, whether being a studio engineer, production manager for live events, tour management, songwriting and performing and this has probably resulted in some missed opportunities for my own endeavors. The pandemic, being the primary struggle that we have all faced over the past few years, gave me the opportunity to take a step back and really focus on what I want and how to achieve it which is putting my songwriting first and sharing the songs with anyone who cares to listen.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’d consider myself a career songwriter. Although I haven’t dabbled much in the publishing world, I’ve been writing songs and perfecting that skill since I was a young child. It’s landed me in many different positions over the past decade and now a nearly full-time career/income. If there’s one thing I’ve learned and would share from my own journey, it’s that if you keep working at whatever makes you happy, you will become sustainable. Setting realistic goals can be hard, but pushing through those struggles is how you make it happen.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I’m a huge podcast nerd. I spend so much time listening to podcasts that I hardly ever listen to music. I even produce my own podcast, Texas Toast, where we interview and highlight the stories of established country music artists and industry folks to encourage those like myself to try to make a career for themselves. “Where Are All My Friends” is another podcast that I’d recommend to anyone in a similar position to myself looking for some positive reinforcement in the music industry.
